English

It should be known that there are three different ways for a certain purpose. Regarding "in all aspects" and so on, it refers to abandoning the mind that cannot perceive all beings, and the afflictions along with their predispositions. Since it is impossible to know things limited by place and time, and the subtle aspects of matter, the Hearers and others do not possess these three great self-natures. This is his intention, because afflictions cannot be eliminated merely through desire. There is no real difference between Bodhisattvas and Buddhas, because they have the potential to attain the qualities of a Buddha. Because of having this intention, it is not a fault to say that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are self-born. If asked, what is the difference between a target and a purpose? The present is the target, that is, the thing that exists nearby. The future is the purpose, that is, the thing that is far away, which is consistent with the statement of the Noble Liberation Section, that is, the combination of arrow and bow, hitting the target, and being in accordance with the Dharma. After explaining the things that serve as the basis for practice, such as the basis, the target, and the purpose, if asked, what is the essence of the practice itself? The answer is: "The wisdom of knowing everything is the realm of the three," referring to the Four Noble Truths and so on. Generally speaking, what completely pervades everything is the thing with the basis of virtuous Dharma, that is, abiding in the Dharmadhatu. Regarding "completely realizing all aspects" and so on, it refers to the fact that in the four realizations, each realization has its own realization to be cultivated, and so on. The so-called having the basis of the six perfections refers to the practice of relying on actions such as generosity, which is practice. Since the realization of the Dharmakaya is essentially pure and omnipresent, it is not explained. After determining the practice in this way, in order to explain their respective characteristics, therefore "as it is" refers to the order to be explained below, that is, the path of application, the path of seeing, the path of cultivation, and the supreme path. The nature of these four is the characteristic of practice, such as armor, etc. Among the contents to be explained below, its essence is diligence, and it is the self-nature of being happy to do good deeds.

He spoke of the practice of armor. Giving and so on, that is, giving and discipline and so on. Six aspects, by summarizing those separately. The meaning of "by" is that giving and so on are themselves within their respective categories. What is the practice of armor? It is to take vows to practice meaningful actions from the very beginning until enlightenment. That is, as it is said, with the purity of the three spheres and so on, from all three mother tantras, with six sets of six, it should be known that thirty-six aspects are taught as they are. The meaning of the verses is that the giving of Dharma and so on is mentioned, because it does not depend on enjoyment, it enables one to truly uphold discipline. By guarding discipline, one becomes endowed with patience. If one can endure sorrow, one will initiate diligence. If one is free from laziness, one will perfect meditation. Perfecting meditation is for the purpose of attaining transcendent wisdom, therefore it is shown by the order of understanding giving and so on. In this regard, the Bodhisattva, for the giving of Dharma and so on, greatly gives the giving of Dharma and material things, and the mind of "one must tame oneself" and so on is the attention of the Hearers. The word "and so on" refers to the attention to things like impermanence, and abandoning it is discipline. All beings speaking unpleasant words is speaking abuse and so on. Enduring it is patience. Aspiration is to manifest the desire for virtue. What arises from this is diligence. The single-mindedness that is not mixed with other vehicles, different from the path of the Hearers and so on, focusing on the non-objectification of all phenomena, is meditation. Dedicating to the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment is to completely dedicate the merit of giving and so on to all sentient beings attaining Buddhahood, and the power is wisdom. For these, it is called giving and so on, not focusing on the object of giving and the giver and so on, but there, only by putting on armor, because of initiating diligence until enlightenment. In the aspect of giving, the Hearers

Renouncing worldly thoughts, here, vowing to act for the benefit of others is discipline. Without it, generosity and other virtues cannot arise, because without discipline, it is unreasonable to act for the benefit of others. Similarly, possessing patience, one gains control over beings. Here too, similarly, one possesses generosity, discipline, diligence, and so on. If there is no patience, enemies will be pacified, because one is in harmony with all beings, therefore generosity and other virtues arise. Similarly, diligence is enthusiasm for virtuous actions; possessing it, one possesses generosity and so on, as well as meditation and wisdom, because without diligence, generosity and so on cannot arise. Similarly, possessing meditation, one possesses generosity and so on, purified in the three spheres, and wisdom, because it is impossible when the mind is distracted. Thus, possessing wisdom, one similarly possesses generosity and so on, because without generosity and so on, it is impossible to dedicate merit entirely to beings for the attainment of enlightenment. Thus, each of generosity and so on includes discipline and so on, therefore, mentioning generosity and so on refers to the six perfections. Just as with generosity, the armor of non-attachment to discipline and so on should be applied similarly. This is what is said about guarding discipline and so on. The meaning of the verses on meditation and so on is that meditation and so on have been explained. The first four are meditation. The sphere of infinite space and so on are the formless absorptions. Generosity and so on are easy to understand. The immeasurable qualities of love and compassion and so on, which universally regard sentient beings of the three realms. Without an object of focus and so on is easy to understand. Truly abiding refers to the ultimate mind of aspiration and practice. Its characteristic is its very nature. Therefore, all the teachings of the Great Vehicle are the arising of the mind of enlightenment.
