Because the Teacher himself considers that the nature of great compassion without object, becomes homogeneous with the Dharmadhatu, therefore the Tathagata will not fall into multiplicity. Isn't it impossible to make the habit of emptiness reach the extreme? Therefore, in order to welcome the doubts of those inferior people who think that "doing nothing at all is the only thing", (the sutra) says: Things cannot be said, Decay and growth are both impossible. With the path called "meditation", What decays and what is obtained? This is because, in the nature of Dharma, the reality of the path that is considered to be the self-nature, is truly empty of self-nature, and it cannot be said to be "that", nor can it be said to be "different", nor can it be said to be "both", nor can it be said to be "neither". Therefore, it is impossible to make the practice reach the extreme. The incompatible aspects and antidotes cannot be separated and produced in order. Therefore, with the path called "meditation", what is the nature of the incompatible aspects that is completely purified, and what is obtained? Shouldn't we admonish with "doing nothing at all"? It is not like that. Because (the sutra) says: How is enlightenment like that, This accomplishes the desired meaning. Enlightenment is suchness, That is also its nature. Just as the enlightenment of suchness without difference, only by the nature of non-conceptual wisdom, the essence of the Buddha of the nature of Dharmakaya, etc., in order to conform to the merit and wisdom of the beings to be tamed, in the way of generating a mind that manifests special meaning, accomplishes the meaning of manifesting what is desired. Through practice, the path that is manifested by separating from temporary defilements, that is, the nature of suchness, also accomplishes the action of manifesting the desired meaning in the conventional. In the ultimate sense, because it is considered that decay and growth are the ways of being negated, so at that time, non-unity itself is unity, so there is no fault. If so, can't it also accomplish meaning in the conventional? In order to welcome such doubts, (the sutra) says: The mind is not enlightened by the former, Nor by the latter's heterogeneous. This is because, becoming the former and the latter,

Because in each and every mind, meanings such as the omniscient nature that accomplishes the enlightenment of the Buddha are not fully manifest, it is unreasonable for each mind to achieve enlightenment. Even many minds arising simultaneously to accomplish the desired meaning are not sufficient, because it is said in the scriptures, 'Sentient beings are each a stream of consciousness,' so it is impossible. To accomplish the unsurpassed enlightenment of the Buddha, even many mental factors arising sequentially, gradually realizing their own nature from mindfulness and abiding closely, up to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, are not sufficient, because they perish as soon as they arise, so there is no connection between them. Therefore, if one acts by generating a mind that manifests a special meaning, that is not correct. As in the example of a lamp: The profound nature of reality has eight aspects. Thus it is said. Just as in the first moment when the flame and the wick meet, because the self-cause generates the meeting simultaneously through mutual means, it does not become special. Without the second moment, there is no burning and no object to be burned as the characteristic of cause and effect. Similarly, the generation of a special flame and wick also occurs in the second moment. Because it would lead to faults such as being permanent, if there were no first moment, it would not arise even conventionally. There is no burning and no object to be burned as the characteristic of cause and effect. Because if it were so, at any time, merely with the nature of conditions, without measuring by the nature of dependent arising, enjoying solitude, relying on the special first moment of the meeting of both through the power of cause and effect. If the special second moment and so on, made by this, possessing excellent power, exists, then, even if it perishes without cause, because cause and effect are perceived to arise and perish simultaneously in order, burning and what is to be burned exist. Therefore, even the first moment depends on the second moment.
