, and how could one fully know up to the attainment of self-enlightenment and omniscience? For those who do not cultivate the path, how could there be the fruit of stream-entry? How could there be the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, the state of Arhat, and even up to self-enlightenment and omniscience? How could one abandon all the afflictions associated with habitual tendencies? Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if that is the case, for those who have the perception of things, since even the corresponding forbearance is not present, how could there be attainment? There is no attainment. How could there be realization? There is no realization. Why is that? Blessed One, for those who do not have the perception of things, is there a corresponding forbearance, or the pure vision, or the place of lineage, or the eighth place, or the place of seeing, or the place of attenuation, or the place of detachment from desire, or the place of accomplishment, or the place of self-awakening, or the place of Bodhisattva, or the place of Buddha? Relying on which path and obscured by which afflictions, so that the Bodhisattva's faults will not be exhausted, and because the Bodhisattva's faults have not been exhausted, so that omniscience has not been attained, so that the obscurations of not abandoning all the afflictions associated with habitual tendencies, having the afflictions of a Hearer or a Self-Awakened One, is there a path that will completely abandon those afflictions? Blessed One, if any dharma that will arise does not arise, then how can one attain omniscience without generating those dharmas?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, it is just so, it is just so. For those who have the perception of non-things, there is no corresponding forbearance. There is no place of realization. There is no place of pure vision. There is no place of lineage. There is no eighth place. There is no place of seeing. There is no place of attenuation. There is no place of detachment from desire. There is no place of accomplishment. It does not become exhausted without fault, and because the Bodhisattva does not become exhausted without fault, he will not attain all-knowingness. Because he has not attained all-knowingness, there is no path to abandon all the obscurations of afflictions that connect habitual tendencies, or to abandon those afflictions that possess the Hearer or the Solitary Buddha.
