They do not think, "It follows the Perfection of Wisdom." They do not think, "Following me are the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, and the Perfection of Meditation." Even the Perfection of Generosity does not think, "I am following the Perfection of Wisdom." The Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, and the Perfection of Meditation also do not think, "I am following the Perfection of Wisdom." Why is that? Because their nature is such that they have no power, are empty of inherent existence, and accumulate like mirages. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, if all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Generosity, practice the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, Perfection of Meditation, and practice the Perfection of Wisdom, and awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment?" The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the six perfections, they think, 'Alas! These beings who dwell in the world are of perverted minds. Because they are unskilled in means, they are unable to be completely liberated from samsara. But I shall practice the Perfection of Generosity for the sake of those beings. I shall practice the Perfection of Morality. I shall practice the Perfection of Patience. I shall practice the Perfection of Diligence. I shall practice the Perfection of Meditation. I shall practice the Perfection of Wisdom.' Then, for the sake of those beings, they completely give up inner and outer things. When they give them up,

Furthermore, he thinks thus: 'I have not given up anything at all.' Why is that? It is because those things are empty of inherent existence. Subhuti, a bodhisattva-mahasattva who understands in this way perfects the perfection of giving. For the sake of those sentient beings, he does not discriminate against times of bad morality. Why is that? It is because he thinks thus: 'I have properly entered into unexcelled, perfect enlightenment, and these things—killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, speaking falsehoods, becoming a slanderer, speaking harsh words, becoming a gossip, becoming greedy, harming others, becoming a wrong view holder, desiring objects, gods, Brahma, the level of hearers, and desiring the level of solitary buddhas—are not similar to my morality.' Subhuti, a bodhisattva-mahasattva who understands in this way engages in the perfection of morality. For the sake of those sentient beings, even if he is constantly reviled and beaten with harsh words and violence, he does not generate a mind of anger. Even if he is struck and beaten with stones, sticks, and weapons, or if his bodily limbs are cut or his limbs and joints are severed, he does not generate a mind of hatred. Why is that? It is because he understands all sounds to be like echoes. He understands all forms to be like bubbles. Subhuti, a bodhisattva-mahasattva who understands in this way engages in the perfection of patience. For the sake of those sentient beings, he does not generate a mind of laziness in order to fully seek all roots of virtue. Why is that? It is because he thinks thus: 'Even being born in the heavenly realms is difficult for the lazy to obtain, what need is there to mention unexcelled, perfect enlightenment? Therefore, I should always exert effort until I actually attain unexcelled, perfect enlightenment.'

Thinking, 'One should not abandon diligence.' Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus fully understands practices the Perfection of Diligence. They do not distract their minds for the sake of those sentient beings. Why is that? It is because they think thus: Even being born in worldly meditation is difficult to achieve with a distracted mind, what need is there to mention unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Therefore, I shall not let my mind be distracted until I manifest unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Maha-sattva who thus fully understands practices the Perfection of Meditation. For the sake of those sentient beings, they will never be separated from wisdom until they manifest unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? It is because they think thus: Without engaging in the Perfection of Wisdom, one cannot ripen sentient beings in other ways. Therefore, I should not generate even a little mind that is contrary to wisdom. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who thus fully understands practices the Perfection of Wisdom for the sake of sentient beings. Question: Blessed One, if there is no difference among the perfections, why is this Perfection of Wisdom called the best of the five perfections? Called the chief? Called the supreme? Called the sacred? Called the excellent? Called the abundant? Called the unsurpassed? Called the incomparable? Called the unequaled? Called equal to the unequal? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, there is indeed no difference among the perfections. If there were no Perfection of Wisdom, then these five perfections would not even obtain the name of perfection. Relying on the Perfection of Wisdom, these five
