If one can understand all dharmas as being like illusions, then the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva for countless kalpas for the sake of sentient beings. Subhuti, because sentient beings do not understand all dharmas as being like illusions, therefore the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the six perfections for countless kalpas. They bring sentient beings to maturity. They purify the Buddha-fields. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, if all dharmas are like dreams, like reflections, like mirages, like optical illusions, like magic, like apparitions, then, World Honored One, where do sentient beings dwell that the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom and elevates sentient beings? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, sentient beings dwell in the false discriminations of names and characteristics, therefore the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom and elevates them from names and characteristics. He asked: World Honored One, what is name? What is characteristic? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, for example, what is called name or characteristic is temporarily imputed with a name. For example, what is called name, or what is called characteristic, or what is called form, or what is called feeling, or what is called perception, or what is called formations, or what is called consciousness, or what is called woman, or what is called man, or what is called boy, or what is called girl, or what is called hell-being, or what is called the birthplace of animals, or what is called the realm of Yama, or what is called god, or what is called human, or what is called conditioned dharma, or what is called unconditioned dharma, What is called the fruit of stream-enterer, or what is called the fruit of once-returner, or what is called the fruit of non-returner, or what is called Arhat, or what is called Pratyekabuddha, or what is called perfect and complete enlightenment, these are all imputed with the name of illusion. Subhuti, all names are the meaning of names.

It is an imputation. All conditioned phenomena to which childish ordinary beings are attached are merely names. For these, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, all names arise from complete discrimination. Do not be attached to the emptiness of the nature of the completely imputed, which is without substance. Those who are skilled in the emptiness of all dharmas do not become manifestly attached, thus encouraging. Subhuti, in this way, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. Subhuti, what is a sign? These two are the signs to which childish ordinary beings are attached. What are the two? For example, the sign of form and the sign of formlessness. Subhuti, what is the sign of form? The past, future, and present forms that are coarse, subtle, good, bad, distant, or near, all dharmas are grasped by complete discrimination in an instant, this is called the sign of form. Subhuti, what is the sign of formlessness? Any formless dharma, when grasped as a sign, is completely imputed and gives rise to afflictions, this is called the sign of formlessness. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he liberates from those signs, places them in the realm of signlessness, and thoroughly subdues them, so that in no way does he fall into the two extremes of "this is a sign, this is signlessness," thus placing and subduing them. Subhuti, in this way, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he liberates sentient beings from signs and thoroughly places them in the realm of signlessness. Request: If all these dharmas are merely thus, regarded as name and sign, regarded as merely an imputation, arising from complete imputation, then, Bhagavan, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, we should also practice virtuous dharmas.

and also strive to obtain the distinctions of virtuous dharmas, and with those roots of virtue, make the grounds completely perfect from ground to ground. They connect sentient beings to the three vehicles. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if there were a thing or a sign of a thing, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he would not obtain distinction, nor would he strive to obtain distinction. Like this, there is neither a sign of a thing, nor is there a thing. Subhuti, therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he perfects the Perfection of Dhyana in the manner of signlessness. He perfects the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Morality, and the Perfection of Generosity in the manner of signlessness. He perfects the four Dhyanas, the four Immeasurables, and the four Formless Absorptions in the manner of signlessness. He perfects the four Mindfulnesses, the four Right Abandonments, the Magical Feet, the Faculties, the Powers, the Limbs of Enlightenment, and the Eightfold Noble Path in the manner of signlessness. He perfects the emptiness of the interior, the emptiness of the exterior, and the emptiness of the interior and exterior in the manner of signlessness. He perfects between the emptiness of the nature of non-things in the manner of signlessness. He perfects the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings in meditative absorption, the four noble truths, and the doors of liberation of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness in the manner of signlessness. He perfects the superknowledges, the samadhis, and the doors of dharani in the manner of signlessness. He perfects the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the Buddha in the manner of signlessness.
