How could it be? Likewise, even omniscience is not perceived. The suchness of omniscience is not perceived; if even omniscience is not perceived, then how could one perceive the suchness of omniscience? Shariputra, when this chapter on suchness, unerring suchness, and non-different suchness was taught, two hundred monks, without attachment, had their minds liberated from the outflows. Five hundred nuns developed the pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, towards all phenomena. Five thousand bodhisattvas obtained the tolerance of non-arising phenomena. Sixty bodhisattvas possessing the Dharma of non-retrogression, without attachment, had their minds liberated from the outflows. Then, the venerable Shariputra, knowing that those bodhisattva-mahasattvas, without attachment, had their minds liberated from the outflows, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, by what cause and what condition do these bodhisattvas become liberated in their minds from the outflows? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, those bodhisattva-mahasattvas attended and served five hundred Buddhas, and at all times gave alms, kept vows, practiced patience, exerted effort, cultivated meditation, and cultivated wisdom, but they were separated from the perfection of wisdom and not fully grasped by skillful means, thinking, "I am the giver of alms, I am the keeper of vows, I am the practitioner of patience, I am the one who exerts effort, I am the one who engages in meditation, I am the one who cultivates wisdom." By acting in this way, they were separated from the perfection of wisdom, and because of unskillful means, they became accustomed to giving, keeping vows, patience, effort, meditation, and wisdom, and because of various aspects, they did not adhere to non-differentiation, therefore they did not enter the faultless path of the bodhisattva. Because they did not enter the faultless path of the bodhisattva, they attained the fruit of stream-entry, and even attained the state of arhatship. Shariputra

Son, although the paths of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness exist for Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, if they are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not fully grasped by skillful means, they will manifest the ultimate reality and become Shravakas. Shariputra asked: Bhagavan, why is it that even though those who meditate on these very dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness appear similar, those who are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means will manifest the ultimate reality and also become Shravakas, while Bodhisattvas, relying on the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, will manifest and fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment by meditating on those very emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness? The Bhagavan replied: Shariputra, some here, separated from the mind of all-knowingness, meditate solely on the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and because they do not rely on skillful means, they will become Shravakas. Shariputra, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas here, those who are not separated from the mind of all-knowingness itself, meditate on the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and through skillful means, they enter the Bodhisattva's realm without fault and manifest and fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Shariputra, it is like this, for example: There is a bird with a body of one hundred yojanas, two hundred yojanas, three hundred yojanas, four hundred yojanas, or five hundred yojanas, and it thinks that it should go from the heaven of the Thirty-three to Jambudvipa. And that bird has no wings. Thinking that it should go to Jambudvipa, it leaps from the heaven of the Thirty-three. If that bird thinks in the middle of the path: Alas, I should return to the heaven of the Thirty-three. Shariputra, what do you think of that? Can that bird return to the heaven of the Thirty-three? Shariputra replied: Bhagavan, that

No, Blessed One. The Blessed One said: If one thinks in the middle of the road, 'Alas, I must not shout or disturb anything, but stay in Jambudvipa.' Shariputra, what do you think of this? Can that wingless bird stay in Jambudvipa without shouting or disturbing anything? Shariputra replied: Blessed One, that is not possible. Blessed One, it will fall from Jambudvipa and will shout or disturb. Why is that? Blessed One, like that, the body is large but the wings are not grown, and jumping from a high place, it will inevitably become like this. The Blessed One said: Shariputra, similarly, a Bodhisattva gives alms, keeps precepts, practices patience, exerts effort, and meditates for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River, and in order to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, his intention is also great, his aspiration is also great, and although he upholds immeasurably, if he lacks Prajnaparamita and skillful means, he will fall into the Sravaka ground or the Pratyekabuddha ground. Why is that? Because in this way, that Bodhisattva does not give alms, keep precepts, practice patience, exert effort, or meditate in accordance with the mind of all-knowingness, but that Bodhisattva lacks Prajnaparamita and skillful means, therefore he will fall into the Sravaka ground or the Pratyekabuddha ground. Shariputra, the precepts, samadhi, wisdom, liberation, and liberation knowledge and vision of the Buddhas of the past, future, and present, if one thinks about and clings to the characteristics, and also takes the characteristics as the object, but does not understand the precepts of the Buddhas, does not understand samadhi, does not understand wisdom, does not understand liberation, does not understand the liberation knowledge and vision, because one does not understand and does not comprehend, upon hearing emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, and peace, one clings to those characteristics of peace, and to those characteristics clings, and is unsurpassed.
