Furthermore, when thoughts of desire, thoughts of prostitutes, and many other things to be attended to arise, Subhuti, if one asks, teaches, recites, and properly attends to this profound Prajnaparamita, the evil Mara will draw near to distract them in order to create obstacles. Those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should recognize these as the actions of Mara. This is called attending to objects, etc. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a son or daughter of a Bodhisattva lineage asks, teaches, recites, and properly attends to this profound Prajnaparamita, they receive many things such as gain, respect, honor, Dharma robes, alms, bedding, medicine, and other necessities. If a son or daughter of a Bodhisattva lineage is about to ask, uphold, recite, and properly attend to this profound Prajnaparamita, and they enjoy those tastes, Subhuti, this should also be recognized as the work of Mara by the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. This is called enjoying the taste of gain, respect, and honor. Furthermore, Subhuti, when those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas ask, uphold, recite, and properly attend to this profound Prajnaparamita, the evil Mara will draw near to those profound Sutras. In this regard, the Bodhisattva, with skillful means, does not generate desire for those profound Sutras approached by Mara. Why is that, Subhuti? Because those Sutras do not accomplish the attainment of all-knowingness. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas with skillful means, having heard this profound Prajnaparamita, also extensively show skillful means to those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who think of abandoning it, and from this profound Prajnaparamita

And one should extensively seek skillful means. Subhuti, likewise, if a son or daughter of noble family of the Great Vehicle abandons this profound Perfection of Wisdom and thinks of seeking skillful means from the Sutras associated with the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, Subhuti, this too should be known as the work of Mara for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, this is seeking skillful means by a path that is not the path. Furthermore, Subhuti, if the one listening to the Dharma desires to inquire about, uphold, and recite this profound Perfection of Wisdom, but the one speaking the Dharma procrastinates, Subhuti, this too should be known as the work of Mara for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, this is falling away due to desire and laziness. Furthermore, Subhuti, if the one speaking the Dharma desires to inquire about, uphold, and recite this profound Perfection of Wisdom, but the one listening to the Dharma goes elsewhere, Subhuti, this too should be known as the work of Mara for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, if the one listening to the Dharma desires to inquire about, desires to uphold, desires to recite, desires to memorize this profound Perfection of Wisdom, but the one speaking the Dharma goes elsewhere, Subhuti, this too should be known as the work of Mara for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, this is falling away due to the difference in the object of desire. Furthermore, Subhuti, if the one speaking the Dharma is attached to gain, respect, praise, diligent service to the teacher, Dharma robes, alms, bedding, medicine, and provisions, while the one listening to the Dharma is content with little desire, greatly detached from greed, diligent, maintains mindfulness without distraction, has one-pointed mind, and possesses wisdom, Subhuti, this does not possess the causes and conditions for inquiring about, upholding, and reciting this profound Perfection of Wisdom and for proper attention, and it should be known as the work of Mara for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. The speaker is one who has few desires and is extremely lacking in contentment, who initiates diligence, who keeps mindfulness close and is not distracted, whose mind is one-pointed, and who becomes one with wisdom. The listener is one who has great desires, who desires evil, who seeks gain, respect, offerings, and who is extremely attached to robes, food, bedding, medicine for illness, and possessions. Subhuti, this is also not endowed with the causes and conditions for questioning, upholding, reciting, and properly attending to this profound perfection of wisdom. Bodhisattvas, great beings, should recognize this as the work of Mara. The so-called seeking of gain and respect, as well as great desire and few desires, are not endowed with these qualities. Furthermore, Subhuti, the speaker is one who dwells in the wilderness, one who begs for alms, one who wears rags from the dustbin, one who does not accept extra food, one who eats only one meal, one who begs for alms as he finds them, one who dwells in the cemetery, one who has no shelter, one who dwells under a tree, one who always sits and does not lie down, one who dwells wherever he is, and one who holds three Dharma robes; the listener is not one who dwells in the wilderness, not one who begs for alms, not one who wears rags from the dustbin, not one who does not accept extra food, not one who eats only one meal, not one who begs for alms as he finds them, not one who dwells in the cemetery, not one who has no shelter, not one who dwells under a tree, not one who always sits and does not lie down, not one who dwells wherever he is, and not one who holds three Dharma robes.
