of. Dig a hole about a fathom high, fill it with water, and some say it contains fish eggs and live fish. Walk a hundred steps accurately, then come back and examine it carefully. It is good if it is full of water, and it is hated if it is low because it desires benefit. If the water makes a sound, it clearly indicates that the nagas are afraid. Thus, the teacher who knows the characteristics of the land well should bathe and place the offerings in front of him. He should put on whatever clothes and ornaments he can find and practice the yoga of the deity very diligently. In the afternoon, in the center of that land, the area of a cowhide is said to be a square mandala. After making it with obvious heavy objects, contemplate the wheel of the mandala there and offer it correctly. Give the directional torma, press the ground with the right thumb, and join the palms. Pray to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions, as well as the protectors of the world. Among the three realms, who is the protector? The great offerings reside with the gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, and so on. I pray to them, in order to accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings, to build a temple on this beautiful land, to enter into the supreme places of hearing and thinking, in order to realize the Dharma nature. I, so-and-so, strive to accomplish the excellent fame of so-and-so. If you can tolerate it, I will do it, otherwise I will not. Through dreams and other omens, please grant me this good land. Say this three times.
