Oh! "Being hostile to friendly and lovely people" means that kings and others inflict harm and injury on my sons and other close relatives who are dear and cherished. "Tormenting Brahmins and others" means that those who belong to the retinue and live on leftovers are tormented by others. "Not being in harmony with each other" means that they are jealous of each other. "Being harmed by the decrease of wealth" means that the possessions of oneself and others will decrease. "The harm that transcends sorrow" means that sorrow is the uneasiness of the mind. "I and" means that one's own body becomes extremely painful. "Harm and" means that due to these two causes, the images of flesh-eaters and others appear in dreams. "Fear and poverty" means that fear is the feeling of goosebumps for no reason. Or it refers to the punishment of the king and so on. Poverty means that the omen of the decrease of wealth has appeared, and one's own self has arisen with worry. "Planets and stars, curses and witchcraft," among which, "planets" refers to the harm of the sun and so on. "Stars" refers to the harm of the Pleiades and so on. "Curses" refers to the curses of sages and so on. "Being afflicted by unpleasant spirits" means being seized by Rakshasas and other fierce beings with great power. "Born from sorrow and fatigue" means born from the suffering of body and mind. "Even if one sees evil in dreams" means that by this method, they will all be abandoned, which is the remaining part. Thus it is declared that if the rituals mentioned above and those that will appear below are properly performed, then even if harm such as the dulling of the senses of beings has occurred, they will surely be liberated, which is its meaning. If someone asks, is it necessary to listen to this sutra, which has such benefits, first? The answer is: This is certainly necessary, because it is a limb of entering the mandala. In order to first declare the method of listening to this sutra, it is said, "That is thoroughly washed and pure." "That" refers to the mandala.

wishing to enter into it. "Thoroughly washed and clean" means to cleanse the face and so on, and to apply fragrant substances such as incense. "The excellent sutra should be listened to" means that this dharani, which possesses infinite benefits, should be listened to and recited. Some may think that explaining the tantra to those who have not entered the mandala is a fault. It is not so, for it should be known that there is no fault in merely explaining the text. Even so, if one thinks it is a fault, then everything will become so. Otherwise, elaboration is sufficient. Now, let us enter into the main text. "Whoever has a virtuous mind and faith" means that "whoever" refers to anyone. "Virtuous mind" means possessing a mind free from harm. "Faith" means possessing faith. Alternatively, the former refers to having two kinds of faith, while the latter refers to having initial faith. "Adorned with clean clothes" means wearing clothes that are not despised, such as Dugula cloth. "Profound, the realm of the Buddha's activity" means that "profound" refers to that which cannot be understood by other words and meanings. "The realm of the Buddha's activity" refers to the realm that only the Tathagata can reach. "If one listens to this sutra" means if one listens to and recites such a sutra. This passage is to explain that those who wish to abandon the various unfavorable qualities mentioned earlier should possess such conduct, and listening to this dharani and so on is for this purpose. If one listens in that way, what benefit will there be? To explain that other benefits can also be obtained, it says, "By the splendor of this sutra," and so on. "All sentient beings" means all that is done for what purpose. "Even unbearable diseases" means eliminating great diseases such as smallpox and anthrax, which are very painful and difficult to abandon. "See all those pacified" means that it should be known that even those will be exhausted and healed. "Life and merit will increase" means in this life. "Liberated from all sins" means
