Now it is called that. The continuum is divided into three types: the basis, the nature, and the inseparable, which must be well distinguished. Nature is the cause of what is to be purified, and likewise, the inseparable is the result. The basis is called means, and the continuum of the three is a summary of the meaning. This will be explained. Because this Guhyasamaja is a Yoga Tantra, therefore, what is common with other Yoga Tantras is the main necessity of this Tantra, which is the Fruit Tantra. What is uncommon is that only from this Guhyasamaja Tantra, the fruit is achieved in the manner of Guhyasamaja, therefore, the Bhagavan Vajradhara, who does not abide in existence or peace, is the bliss of great liberation, which is inexhaustible and imperishable, and has dominion over all unsurpassed dharmas. Therefore, this is the most excellent of the purposes of a person, and so it is the main necessity. Although he himself has no difference, it is nominally made different by the division of means. Among them, the means called Guhyasamaja is superior to all other means, because it enables one to attain the state of great Vajradhara with great bliss and speed. Therefore, the fruit obtained by it, called Guhyasamaja, is also said to be the most excellent of all fruits. The Tantra of the Cause and the Tantra of the Means are the means that accord with the necessity, because they are capable of being practiced with the characteristics of hearing and thinking, and because by practicing them, the necessity is accomplished. The means are also, as they are, the collection of secrets. The relationship is that in order to gather words and speech into one meaning, they become mutually beneficial with dependence preceding them, and will be explained in the fifth, ninth, seventeenth, and thirteenth chapters, etc., which will be explained later. The necessity has been stated. The summarized meaning should also be understood from the explanation of the relationship. The meaning and connection of words, and the answers to refutations, etc., will also be explained as they are in the situation. Like this, because it is a service to the Tathagata, therefore, initially...

Since all lands have been perfectly accumulated, and it is known in the world as the best in hearing and upholding, therefore, the one who compiles the Hearer Vehicle collection is the noble Ānanda. Similarly, the compiler of the Bodhisattva Vehicle collection is the Blessed One Vajrapāṇi, because he is the lord of the form bodies of the Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon and the protector of the Dharma assembly, and in the sūtras such as the Vajrapāṇi empowerment, there is a record of entrusting the teachings. In the seventeenth chapter, what is called Vajra Dharma and the King of Dharma Freedom also refers to Vajrapāṇi himself. The Vajra Vehicle is the Vajra Dharma and the Vajra Dharma Freedom, and because it is entrusted to him, he is called Vajra Dharma and Vajra Dharma Freedom. Therefore, in this way, when all of the Bodhisattva Vehicle is compiled by one Bodhisattva, it should be known that he is the compiler, the speaker, and the lord of the Dharma, otherwise it is not. The Blessed One also said to the monks: 'Monks, you should compile the Dharma with "Thus I have heard, at one time..."' Therefore, the compiler Vajrapāṇi said 'Thus I have heard' and so on. This is because the speaker himself manifests perfect complete enlightenment and then speaks the Dharma, and it is because he compiles after hearing from the speaker. The word 'hearing' indicates the compiler, meaning 'it is hearing, not what I have realized'. Since it is very unreliable to transmit from one hearer to another, therefore it is said 'Thus I have heard', meaning that oneself has heard it from the speaker, not from others, or after hearing from others, oneself speaks. Even if one has heard it personally, if one cannot remember everything, or if one adds or subtracts, one cannot become a true compiler, therefore, in order to show that it is true and without error, 'Thus' is said, meaning that the letters, words, and intonation, etc., are all in accordance with the order of the topic and occasion.
