To further elaborate, because one does not understand such samadhi, one clings to the conventional, and various diseases arise as a result; those are all illusory manifestations. Thus it is said, this samadhi is like an illusion, because one does not understand it, therefore "clinging to the conventional," meaning regarding the conventional as real, if one clings to this, various diseases will arise, this is because wrong views have arisen. Because all dharmas are like illusions, they are their own reality, arising from dependent origination and appearing separately, therefore, whatever appears separately is only an illusion, just like the elephant conjured by a magician. These aggregates and so on also appear separately, therefore, they are like illusions, this is the reason of self-nature. Therefore, those who assert the existence of external objects, or those who merely assert mind-only, their assertion that the aggregates and so on are real, or that they are mind-only, will be refuted. Therefore, because one does not understand the illusion-like samadhi, one relies on the characteristics of names, and is bound by the net of various views, and afflictions such as desire arise from this, all of these are illusory manifestations, the illusory play of the nature of elaboration, thus it is declared. To further elaborate this meaning, the oral instructions that I have blessed, whoever has not practiced from the guru, because of clinging to permanence and annihilation, that person will regress. Thus it is said, if a disciple has not practiced the illusion-like samadhi of the oral instructions that I have blessed from the guru, that is, from the teacher, then he will not be able to obtain it, if he clings to the views of permanence and annihilation, then that person will regress again. That is because he has fallen to the level of an ordinary person, therefore it is said to be regression. If the proponents of external objects follow the collection of real things and nirvana, and the proponents of mind-only merely follow mind-only, then at that time the bias of permanence will arise. If one claims to be a Madhyamika, saying that all things are merely emptiness, then that is the extreme of annihilation. Of mantras,

Even a yogi who practices in one direction, if they desire the body of mantra, then they are speaking of the side of permanence. If, with the stages that focus on the mind, they desire the side of unwavering samadhi, they will fall into the side of annihilation. Worldly materialists speak of the side of annihilation. Enumerators and others also speak of the side of permanence because they believe that there are twenty-four realities. Therefore, all these reversions are in samsara. Therefore, one should strive in this samadhi. Now, in order to explain the samadhi that is like an illusion, one should make offerings to the guru. To explain this, it is said: Having completely abandoned all offerings, truly begin to offer to the guru. By pleasing him, the supreme wisdom of omniscience will be attained. Thus it is said, all offerings are offerings to the Three Jewels and so forth. Having completely abandoned those, only the guru's offering is the most supreme. Because by pleasing the gurus, one quickly attains the wisdom of omniscience. It is also said in the Hundred Thousand Verses that by relying on a spiritual friend, one attains the enlightenment of a Buddha. In order to explain that very offering, it is said: By offering to the Vajrasattva, the teacher of unsurpassed enlightenment, what merit has he not done? What asceticism has he not practiced? Thus it is said, merit refers to relying on the five perfections such as generosity, and asceticism refers to guarding the vows taught in the eighth individual liberation and so forth. There is nothing that person has not done or practiced; rather, he has only done and practiced. Because the teacher alone is Vajrasattva, unsurpassed, and the most supreme, because offerings are made to him. That offering is also preceded by hearing the Dharma, honoring the guru, and offering external objects to him. In order to explain that, it is said: Whatever is most pleasing and whatever is most special to that inexhaustible desire, offer that to the guru. Thus it is said, for a while external objects and so forth are exhaustible. If one wants those to be inexhaustible, then offer those to the guru.
