When urged in this way, if someone is timid, thinking that omniscience is not easy to obtain, and lacks faith, and like sandalwood, only sees the faults of the guru, the teacher, and does not see the virtues, then he is like a sandalwood person. It should be said again: wanting to obtain it without respectful listening, saying "it is not so" with harsh words, and then leaving with anger. If you see the guru in the sangha, turn your back on him, and if you go to a secluded place alone, you will prostrate to him. Wanting to listen respectfully, and making offerings for this purpose, is respectful listening. Abandoning respectful listening, not listening respectfully, quickly, by easy means, wanting to obtain the suchness of the means through doubt. If the guru knows that this person is hypocritical, in order to dispel his doubts, saying "it is not so" with gentle words, when the guru says this, he will be angry, and then leave, that is running away. If you see your own guru in the sangha, that is, see him in the crowd, turn your back on him, that is, cover your head and hide. If you go to a secluded place, and see the guru alone in a hidden place, you will prostrate to him. Because he does not bestow grace. Like this, for the inferior disciple who is evil by nature: even if he is one's own son, and is taken by the noble ones, born from the royal caste, the noble caste, even if he is of the highest caste, never let him stay by your side. Thus it is said. Sandalwood, that is, such a bad disciple, even if he is one's own son, and is not given by others, is not false, but is born from oneself, born from oneself, but if he has the various faults mentioned earlier, and is evil by nature, do not let him stay by your side, do not let him get close, and do not teach him the Dharma. Similarly, for the three people of the Brahmin caste, etc., they are the most noble, are capable vessels, and they are also taken by the noble ones, loved by the noble ones, but if they have the faults mentioned earlier, do not let them stay by your side. This is the literal meaning. A person like a jewel is: possessing excellent qualities, and possessing diligence.

pa. Then, respect the lama and his retinue, and regard them as equal to the Buddha. Comprehend all the Buddha's teachings and have great faith in the doctrine. This is a suitable vessel, and kindness should be bestowed upon it. Thus it is said. Good qualities are those such as discipline, and possessing them. Wisdom is the gradual realization through hearing and so on, and because it possesses that, it is with wisdom. Joy in virtuous Dharma is possessing diligence. Similarly, with respect, one regards the lama's retinue, the vajra master and his retinue, as equal to the Buddha. Similarly, knowing the three collections of the Buddha's teachings. And having great faith in the path taught by the Bhagavan, that is suitable as a vessel for the oral instructions, and only kindness should be bestowed upon it. This is the literal meaning. Now, the characteristics of someone like an utpala (उत्पल, utpala, blue lotus). Even though one has heard many tantras and is skilled in the scriptures, one has little reverence and service before the lama, and has not received the oral instructions. That one cannot benefit oneself and is known only for treatises. That one's treatises become only a cause for sorrow. Thus it is said. First, having heard the sutras, vinaya, and abhidharma, one is skilled and learned in the sutras of the Mahayana sutras. Then, even though one has heard many tantras in the order of the action tantras and so on, one has little reverence and service before the lama who possesses the oral instructions, and is not focused. Therefore, one has not heard the oral instructions and does not know the true oral instructions. That one is known only for treatises, therefore one is known as a treatise. That one cannot benefit oneself, because one is impoverished of the wealth of oral instructions, therefore one is not capable. That one's many heard treatises become only a cause for sorrow, that is, a cause for suffering, arguing with others every day, and not finding the taste of meditation that is very peaceful. Therefore, that one is also not suitable as a vessel for the gradual oral instructions. This is the literal meaning. Now, the person like a white lotus, that one has good fortune and has received the oral instructions, but if one's intelligence is dull and the meaning
