Possessing diligence, always acting according to the Guru's instructions. Even without being appointed, with one's own intelligence, offering implements and other objects, whatever is found and whatever is possible. Likewise, offering food and other provisions. However one is despised, enduring without discouragement in mind. A disciple who possesses all qualities, who contemplates with scripture and reasoning, who has the nature of being unexamined, without anyone like this, it is said that one cannot be made a disciple, as the Buddhas have well spoken. Just as a child freely throws clods of earth, whoever is under the control of others is not a vessel for the sacred Dharma. Thus it is said. Disparaging the Guru, being deceitful, and lacking faith, boasting of mantras and being conceited by seeing scriptures. To those who lack faith and have inferior empowerment, not even a sequence of words should be spoken. Some have respect and faith in the Guru, and always diligently attend to and honor with devotion. Whatever is heard and held by the noble Guru, not mistaking the Guru's kindness, the Guru's blessings, the Guru's wealth. If a few fall from the peak of Mount Meru, although one thinks they will not fall, they will fall. If one obtains beneficial scriptural authority through the Guru's kindness, although one thinks one will not be liberated, one will be liberated. Thus he taught. Again he said, whoever has a deceitful mind, is lazy, has afflictions, sees the Guru's faults and not his qualities, reviles the Guru and boasts of having received empowerment, a sentient being with inferior intelligence will not attain omniscience. Without service and reverence, quickly abandoning that, with anger and wavering, holding to wrong views. In the assembly, if one sees the Guru, one turns one's back, and then goes to a solitary place and prostrates. A disciple whose nature has become evil, even if he is one's own son, should be completely abandoned like a stranger. Even if born from a noble lineage such as royalty, the teachings should not be placed near him. Possessing supreme qualities, intelligence, and diligence, or respecting the Guru like a Buddha, understanding the Victorious One's Dharma and having great faith in the teachings, he is beneficial, therefore kindness should be bestowed. Although one has heard the tantras and has well-studied the scriptures, without the Guru's service and reverence and without obtaining scriptural authority, that is of no benefit to oneself and is a minor treatise. That is merely the cause for the birth of treatises. Or else, a fortunate one obtains the instructions, but is dull-witted and unable to apply them to practice, explaining to others with intelligence.
