Those who are immersed in the conceptual thoughts arising from the causes of habitual tendencies of inherent nature, such as permanence and annihilation, when learning the samadhi of the stages of the completion stage, should they learn according to the order as it is? Or, with just the oral instructions of the guru, will they make them appear separately in an instant? The Vajra Master said: One should learn by entering gradually, not all at once. The Bhagavan himself also said in the Lankavatara Sutra: Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati, in order to purify the stream of his own mind's appearance, again requested the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, is the stream of one's own mind's appearance purified all at once? Or is it purified by entering gradually? The Bhagavan replied: Mahamati, the stream of one's own mind's appearance is purified by entering gradually, not all at once. For example, Mahamati, the fruit of the mango tree ripens gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, likewise, the stream of sentient beings' own mind's appearance is also gradually purified, not all at once. Mahamati, for example, the potter's vessels are made gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, likewise, the Tathagata also gradually tames the stream of sentient beings' own mind's appearance, not all at once. Mahamati, for example, from the great earth, grass, trees, medicinal herbs, and forests grow gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, likewise, the Tathagata also gradually tames the stream of all sentient beings' own mind's appearance, not all at once. Mahamati, for example, skill in laughter, music, singing, lute, cymbals, and musical instruments arises gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, likewise, the Tathagata also gradually tames the stream of all sentient beings' own mind's appearance, not all at once. This very order is the samadhi of the Heroic Progress.

It is also clearly stated in the Sutra Pitaka. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Blo-gros-brtan-pa (Steadfast Intelligence) said this: "Bhagavan, how should a Bodhisattva learn so that, without arrogance in all trainings, they may learn this Samadhi of Heroic Progress?" After this was said, the Bhagavan spoke thus to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Blo-gros-brtan-pa: "Blo-gros-brtan-pa, it is like this: for example, a teacher of archery or a student of archery first shoots at a cowhide. When they are accustomed to shooting at a cowhide, they then shoot at a wooden board. When they are accustomed to shooting at a wooden board, they then shoot at a target. When they are accustomed to shooting at a target, they then shoot at the handle of the target. When they are accustomed to shooting at the handle, they then shoot at a hundred hairs. When they are accustomed to shooting at a hundred hairs, they then shoot at ten hairs. When they are accustomed to shooting at ten hairs, they then shoot at one hair. When they are accustomed to shooting at one hair, they then shoot at a target indicated by a hair. When they shoot at a target indicated by sound, they will shoot without awareness. When they shoot without awareness, the learning of archery is complete. If one desires this, even in the darkness of night, wherever any human or non-human makes a sound, the arrow will go unerringly and spontaneously to the target. Because one is accustomed to shooting at a target indicated by sound, one does not need to learn anywhere else later. Why is that? Because one has learned well before, all targets to be shot will become manifest. Blo-gros-brtan-pa, similarly, a Bodhisattva who abides in this Samadhi of Heroic Progress does not need to learn any Dharma later. Why is that? Because one has learned well before in that Samadhi itself, all the qualities of a Bodhisattva will become manifest. Again, in the same way, one who wishes to learn the Samadhi of Heroic Progress while abiding in the Vajrayana should also learn in this order. The order is this: first, one should learn the thought of the Buddha Vehicle.

When I become accustomed to the thought of the Buddha's vehicle, then I will train in the samadhi of single-mindedness in the new vehicle. When I become accustomed to the samadhi of single-mindedness in the new vehicle, then I will train in the yoga of conceptual cultivation. When I become accustomed to the yoga of conceptual cultivation, then I will abide in the samadhi of the first practitioner. When I abide in the samadhi of the first practitioner, then I will enter into the hundredfold divisions. When I am skilled in the hundredfold divisions and know that the body is completely isolated, then I will abide in the samadhi of the body vajra. Having abided in the complete isolation of the body, I will enter into the complete isolation of speech through the door of vowels and consonants. When I know the breath and diligence through the order of vajra recitation, then I will abide in the samadhi of the speech vajra. Having abided in the complete isolation of speech, I will enter into the complete isolation of mind through the order of self-appearing. When I am accustomed to the self-appearing, with the complete distinction of the mount of wind, just as it is, then I will enter into the samadhi of mind. Having abided in the complete knowledge of the mind as it is, I will enter into the conventional truth through the twelve examples of illusion. When I enter into the samadhi of illusion-like, then I will receive the empowerment of the Buddha. When I receive the empowerment, having abided in the samadhi of illusion-like, I will enter into the ultimate truth through the order of the eighteen great emptinesses. When I enter into the true limit through the samadhi of holding as a whole and subsequently dissolving, then all defilements will be completely purified. When, for the sake of the gradual arising of wisdom, I myself manifest complete and perfect enlightenment in the form of the non-duality of the two truths of self-luminous nature, then I have become accustomed to the perfect samadhi. When the yogi enters into the perfect samadhi, then he will not train in any dharma afterwards. Why is that? Because he has been well trained before, just like the teacher of throwing.
