The Lamp That Gathers Practices. Āryadeva. The Lamp That Gathers Practices. Āryadeva. Chapter One: Severing Doubts from the Gathering of Practices. In Sanskrit: Caryamelapanapradīpaṃ. In Tibetan: The Lamp That Gathers Practices. Homage to the great bodhisattva Mañjuśrī Jñānasattva. Homage to the unreal, pure, and equal to space. Homage to the complete, wordless, and devoid of letters. Homage to the past and future, all attained. Homage to the all-pervading, complete, and empty. In this Vajrayana, the practice through the door of mantra is twofold: utmost devotion to the guru's secret mantra and utmost inner devotion. For the sake of those who have reached the other shore of hearing, to benefit all sentient beings, in order to clearly illuminate the words of the scriptures, tantras, and realizations that are truly spoken, having examined many beautiful and vast words, extracting from the authentic tantras of verses and single sentences, such as ornamented words, and alternating and extremely alternating ones. In order for the childish beings to comprehend, the limbs of the means of accomplishment, like a lamp, that have arisen in the past should not be abandoned. Why is that? In the times of perfection, three perfections, and two perfections, worldly people were complete with long life and health, and those complete with virtues such as generosity and ethical conduct dwelled in the treatises and diligently sought, thus entering into the knowledge of suchness, and vast words, etc., and through the door of ornamented words, revealed suchness. They also comprehended. Now is the time of strife, and worldly people are deficient in long life and health, and completeness, and possess deceit, pretense, arrogance, and jealousy. They are weak in wisdom and delight in evil deeds, etc., due to wrong views, so they do not like the meanings of vast words, etc., of ornamented words, so they do not seek suchness. Therefore, by abandoning the search for the initial treatises, they do not realize suchness, and in virtuous and non-virtuous actions

Excessive indulgence will lead to death. Therefore, for those who desire to attain liberation, those sounds dwelling in the gate of words, such as beautiful rhetoric and extensive speech, become unnecessary, for they are like rafts. The Bhagavan also said that one should follow the meaning, not adhere to the literal words. Having seen the importance of this meaning, the instructions of my teacher Nagarjuna, through the generation stage, attain the samadhi of the completion stage. In order for both created and uncreated disciples to understand in common, through the gate of words, to clearly elucidate the Suchness of mantra, the Suchness of mudra, the Suchness of self, the Suchness of dharma, and the Suchness of deities, these five stages, the sutras, tantras, and treatises will be mixed and explained. The Bhagavan said in all the scriptures explaining sutras and so on, "Even in billions of kalpas, without it, there will be no accomplishment." As it is said in the Great Yoga Tantra of the Four Goddesses Asking the Bhagavan, "Of the Great Hero's eighty-four thousand aggregates of dharma, whoever does not know this Suchness, all of it is without fruit." The Vajra disciple asked, "If one does not know Suchness, will one not become enlightened?" The Bhagavan said, "Yes." Then, please listen to the nature of Suchness from the perspective of the sutras. Because the Mahayana practitioners and logicians, etc., all abide in this meaning and realize Suchness in various ways. In order to gather them, please, Bhagavan, explain what this so-called Suchness is. The Vajra Acharya said, "What is true, that is Suchness." Asked, "Bhagavan, what is the nature of what is called true?" Answered, "What is non-deceptive is called true." Asked, "What is non-deceptive like?" Answered, "The samadhi that possesses the nature of extreme truth is called non-deceptive." Asked, "Again,"

What is the Samadhi that possesses the nature of reality? It is said: That which has the characteristic of the aspect of the two truths being non-dual is the Samadhi that possesses the nature of reality. Asked: Blessed One, what are these two truths? It is said: The first is the conventional truth, and the second is the ultimate truth. Asked: Blessed One, what are the characteristics of the two truths? The Vajra Master said: The Blessed One taught in the Vajra Peak Tantra: Vajrapani asked: Blessed One, what is the ultimate truth, the abode of all dharmas? The Blessed One said: Lord of Secrets, all dharmas are the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, and those that go and do not go. Moreover, by abiding in the ultimate truth, the ultimate truth is without self, unconquerable, all empty, without increase, without decrease, completely pure, equal to space, and of stainless essence. Without letters, without words, separated from body, speech, and mind. It is not existent, it is not non-existent. It is not moving, it is not non-moving. It is not far, it is not near. It is not empty, it is not non-empty. It is not even the Middle Way. This is the ultimate truth. Therefore, it is supremely profound, difficult to enter, without birth, and without cessation. That which arises from causes and conditions is the conventional truth. It is like a dream, an illusion, and an image, possessing the appearance of illusion, and is the Samadhi like illusion. By its own nature, it becomes the cause of the four Brahma abodes, which is the conventional truth. The order of integrating these two in union is the Samadhi that possesses the nature of reality. That which is the complete pacification of all objects of focus is called Suchness. The Vajra disciple asked: For ordinary beings like us, from beginningless time, we are attached to various external objects, and there is existence and non-existence, one and many, two and non-two, neither existence nor non-existence, and so on.
