The cause of omniscience is the mind of Bodhi (བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་སེམས་, bodhicitta, mind of enlightenment). 'Love is great compassion,' it is said. Therefore, even just generating the mind of Bodhi motivated by compassion is said to obtain an immeasurable accumulation of merit. As it is said in the *Inconceivable Secret Sutra*: 'Whatever merit there is in the mind of Bodhi, if it had form, it would fill the entirety of space, and even surpass that.' Therefore, the virtue of generating the mind is inexhaustible and ever-increasing. As the master Shantideva (ཞི་བ་ལྷས།, Śāntideva) said: 'All other virtues, like trees, are exhausted after producing fruit. The tree of the mind of Bodhi constantly bears fruit, so it never diminishes but always increases.' Therefore, all virtuous actions such as generosity, motivated by the generation of the mind, will definitely become conducive to liberation, a great accumulation of merit, and a cause for Buddhahood, and should be practiced accordingly. That things become conducive to liberation refers to the *Perfection of Wisdom* (ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པ་, prajñāpāramitā), the profound Dharma of *Sherchin* (ཤེར་ཕྱིན་, Prajñāpāramitā), pure Dharma giving, and the giving of love. Thus, in the *Complete Grasp of the Qualities of the Lama*, it says: 'Better than offering to Buddhas with faith by as many beings as there are in the three thousand worlds, is to cherish one sentient being with compassion, even a single verse is superior.' 'Better than illuminating with lamps the islands of as many sentient beings as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, shrouded in darkness, is to teach the Dharma with love for a moment.' 'Better than filling the three thousand worlds with jewels and giving them to the poor, is to speak a single verse, for it is of great meaning.' Therefore, other Dharma practices that take this *Sherchin* (ཤེར་ཕྱིན་, Prajñāpāramitā) itself as their object are also said to obtain an immeasurable accumulation of merit conducive to liberation. As the Victorious Maitreya (བྱམས་པས།, Maitreya) said: 'Writing, offering, giving, listening, reading, receiving, holding, reciting and understanding its meaning, contemplating and meditating on it.' The nature of these ten practices is an immeasurable accumulation of merit. Therefore, if one possesses all three: a pure field, intention, and object, one will obtain a very great accumulation of merit, and even if one possesses only one of these, it will become a great accumulation of merit. Virtuous actions that take as their object the representations of body, speech, and mind that possess the above-mentioned qualities will also become virtues conducive to liberation. Thus, it is said in the sutras: 'For example, the great three thousand world system...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one were to subdue all sentient beings in all realms of existence and offer them excellent and abundant necessities for as long as they live, any son or daughter of good family who were to make a stupa the size of a mustard seed out of sand, place a central pole the size of a needle in it, and cover it with a parasol the size of a willow leaf, would generate far more merit. The former would not bear even a hundredth part of the latter's merit, let alone be comparable in number, part, or example.' Thus, knowing that immeasurable merit is obtained by making those excellent fields of merit the object, immeasurable knowledge can be measured, but no one other than the Buddha can know it. As it is said in the Bhadrakalpika Sutra: 'The Bodhisattva offers to the Victorious Ones, and the immeasurable four dharmas, the realms of the earth and the realms of sentient beings, no one but the Teacher (Buddha) can know.' Therefore, we should trust these reliable scriptures and practice accordingly. Furthermore, it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'In fields of virtue and fields of benefit, great virtue arises for those who suffer.' The fields of virtue have been mentioned above, and the fields of benefit are those who are kind to oneself, such as parents, and those who are helpless and miserable, such as the sick, who are objects of compassion. Therefore, driven by compassion and great Bodhichitta, one should, to the best of one's ability, serve the elderly and help the helpless through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and possessions. As the great master Nagarjuna said: 'Diligently attend to parents, make offerings to the noble ones, the sick, the helpless, afflicted by suffering, the poor, the lowly, and the wicked, always hold them with compassion, and diligently strive to heal them.' Therefore, if combined with Bodhichitta, even relying on intermediate or inferior objects can become a condition for liberation, so one should practice accordingly. The above is the measurement of the accumulation of merit arising from generosity. Next is the measurement of the accumulation of merit arising from ethics: The vows of the Shravakas, if practiced in conjunction with the Mahayana Bodhichitta, can also become a condition for liberation and a cause for Buddhahood. Because its duration is as long as life, and its fruit is aimed at the Arhat who has remaining or no remaining afflictions for his own benefit. The vows of Bodhisattvas and Vidyadharas must be combined with Bodhichitta. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
