From all seeds, fruits arise that resemble their causes. Without a seed, how can there be a fruit? Who with knowledge can prove it? (Just as there can be no fruit without a cause) That very element (dhatu) which is the seed (bija) of (Buddha), I (Nagarjuna) consider to be the support of all dharmas (of samsara and nirvana), (existing from the very beginning, at all times). Through gradually purifying the defilements (that enter) (on the paths), one will attain the state of Buddhahood (free from defilements). (Although naturally pure, it is obscured by obscurations, for example) even the stainless sun and moon are, (Examples of desire) clouds and (of malice) fog, (of laziness) smoke, (Of agitation) Rahu's face and (of doubt) dust, etc., obscured by five obscurations. Similarly, the mind (the nature of all beings) of clear light, is obscured by desire and malice, laziness, agitation and doubt, these five obscurations. (Therefore, the Buddha, who is complete with all qualities such as power, exists in all beings, but) (By striving on the path to eliminate obscurations, the defilements are exhausted, but the clear light is not exhausted, for example) just as a cloth (of limestone) that is (purified) by fire, is stained with various (kinds of) stains, just as when it is put into the fire, the stains (all) burn (but) the cloth (does not burn). Similarly, the mind (the nature of beings) of clear light, is stained with desire, etc., (The fire of wisdom of the path burns the stains (but does not burn the clear light, so when the fruit is attained,) (It is not like iron being exhausted or grinding being exhausted, the qualities of clear light do not disappear, so the path) itself does not (burn) the clear light. (Then, the sutras that the Buddha spoke, which proclaim emptiness, since they proclaim that everything is empty, do they not also negate the way of existence of clear light?) The sutras that proclaim emptiness, Whatever (intention) the Buddha spoke, (all of) these are to eliminate (the afflictions of self-grasping), not to destroy (the Buddha) element (dhatu), (not to prevent it). (Ultimately, the dharmadhatu cannot be prevented, for example) just as the water that exists in the earth, exists (naturally) without defilement, so too, wisdom in the afflictions, exists without defilement (always indispensable, constantly). ], "english_translations": [ "Q: So, does the ultimate intent of the sutras that teach emptiness mean that the Dharmadhatu, which is empty of the conventional 'self', is also empty?", "If the Dharmadhatu exists ultimately, isn't it the 'self'?", "A: Why is the Dharmadhatu not the (conventional) 'self'?
