The Praise of Dharmadhatu by the Holy Nagarjuna The Praise of Dharmadhatu by the Holy Nagarjuna The Praise of Dharmadhatu by the Holy Nagarjuna In the language of India: Dharmadhatu Stotra. In the language of Tibet: (translated as) Praise of Dharmadhatu. (Source of glory) Homage to youthful Manjushri! If one does not fully know (the single wisdom), (the vessel world) revolves in the three existences, (the sentient world) all sentient beings are definitely abiding (as pervasive) in all (vessels and beings). I pay homage to the Dharmadhatu! That (Dharmadhatu) which (combined with all adventitious stains) becomes the cause of samsara, that (stain of the path) having been purified, (the stain of the Dharmadhatu) purity itself is nirvana, and the Dharmakaya is also that. (Because it is mixed with all stains, the Dharmadhatu is not visible, for example) Just as when mixed with milk, the essence of butter is not visible. (For example) Likewise, when mixed with afflictions (all), the Dharmadhatu is also not visible. (Visible from purifying stains, for example) Just as when milk is completely purified, the essence of butter (obstructing) without stain (becomes visible). (For example) Likewise, when (the path's) afflictions are completely purified (and exhausted), the Dharmadhatu becomes extremely stainless (manifestly visible). (As a basis, sentient beings At the time of, for example) Just as if a lamp is inside a vase, it will not appear even a little. (For example) Likewise, (in) the vase of afflictions (in) dwells, the Dharmadhatu is also not visible. (At the time of the path, traversing the bhumis) From whatever direction, (afflictions) a hole is made (on) the vase, (the bhumis) from that very direction, the nature of light will appear (the ultimate). When with the samadhi vajra, (the obscuring) vase (completely) is broken (when), (obtaining the result) that (of) time (Dharmadhatu) is like the sky, until the end appears (and is visible and clear). (So is the Dharmadhatu exhausted at the time of sentient beings, and is it not a conditioned phenomenon that arises at the time of the path and the result?) The Dharmadhatu is not (newly) born, (have --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the time of sentient beings, (the essence of Dharmadhatu) never ceases. In all times (of base, path, and fruit), there are no (naturally occurring) afflictions. In the beginning (base), middle (path), and end (fruit), (it is naturally) free from defilements. (If Dharmadhatu is always unceasingly bright, why don't all sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas see it as bright without distinction?) Like a precious lapis lazuli, even if it is bright at all times, if it resides inside a (obstructing) stone, its light will not be clear. (For example) Similarly, the Dharmadhatu (nature), which is obscured by afflictions, is extremely immaculate (bright). In the (afflicted) samsara, (in suffering) its light is not clear (to anyone). (From) liberation from suffering, (it will) become clear and bright. (If there is a Buddha from the beginning, then effort is meaningful, for example) If there is a gold mine, by doing work (such as digging in rocks, etc.), (gold) veins will appear (and be obtained). (If) there is no mine from the beginning, even if work is done, (only tiring) afflictions will arise. (Even if it exists from the beginning, but when obscured, it does not perform the work of a Buddha, for example) Just as when covered by chaff, the grain is not desired (to be enjoyed). Similarly, (the Buddha-nature that is naturally present in sentient beings) is covered by afflictions, (with defilements) it is not considered a Buddha (in the time of sentient beings). (If it is liberated from defilements, it will appear as a Buddha, for example) Just as when liberated from chaff, the grain (itself) will appear. Similarly, when liberated from afflictions, (the originally present) Dharmakaya itself will be completely clear. (For) the water tree, (the trunk) has no heartwood, in the world (it is taken as) an example (of having no heartwood). But (it is not without fruit, the water tree) its fruit is the heartwood itself, which can be eaten (sweetly). (As one's own nature) the samsara (said to be) without heartwood (possesses Buddha-nature), if liberated from the cage of afflictions, (the practitioner) his (liberated) fruit is the heartwood (Buddha) itself (having attained), it becomes the nectar (that eliminates birth, old age, sickness, and death) for all beings. (If there is a cause, there will be a result) Similarly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
