For example, the dust on the tip of a fingernail, compared to the dust on the earth, is not even close to one percent, let alone one-thousandth, one-millionth, or in terms of counting, comparison, or metaphor. The water in a cow's footprint, compared to the water in the four great oceans, is not even close to one percent, let alone in terms of metaphor. O truly noble and excellent one, similarly, the merit I have spoken of, from having faith in the sutras of expedient meaning to engaging in practice through meditation, compared to the merit of having faith in the teachings of definitive meaning to perfectly accomplishing practice through meditation, is not even close to one percent, let alone in terms of metaphor. Also, in the Five Hundred Prajñāpāramitā Sutra, it says: 'Subhuti, whatever the Blessed One has taught regarding form as being without inherent existence, without arising, without ceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally completely liberated from suffering, all those teachings are not intended to be interpreted ambiguously; they should be understood according to their literal meaning.' If someone speaks in that way, they are even more external than the outsiders, abiding in the realm of ordinary individuals, holding wrong views.' I say. ' etc., it is extensively taught. Therefore, it is taught that viewing everything as empty and as a negation is the extreme and should be abandoned. In the fifty-ninth chapter of the Middle Length Prajñāpāramitā Sutra: 'Subhuti said: Blessed One, I have no hesitation or doubt about these teachings. However, in times when the Blessed One has not appeared, monks of the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, or the Bodhisattva Vehicle might say this: If all phenomena are of the nature of non-entity, then who will be afflicted by defilements, and who will become purified?' Because they do not understand defilement and purification, they will have perverted morality, perverted views, perverted conduct, and perverted livelihood. Those with perverted morality, perverted views, perverted conduct, and perverted livelihood will go to one of the three lower realms: hell, the animal realm, or the realm of Yama, the Lord of Death. Blessed One, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having seen those fears that had not yet arisen, I inquired about that matter to the Tathāgata (Thus Gone, the Awakened One), the Arhat (Worthy One, the Destroyer of Enemies), the Samyak-saṃbuddha (Perfectly and Completely Awakened Buddha). Blessed One, I have no hesitation or doubt about this Dharma nature (Dharmatā, the nature of things).' The Blessed One said, 'Excellent! Excellent! It is just as you have said.' Also, in the Ratnakūṭa Sūtra (Heap of Jewels Sutra): 'Śāriputra, it is better to abide in the view of self as large as Mount Sumeru (the central mountain of the universe), but not to hold the pride of manifestion while viewing emptiness (Śūnyatā, emptiness, voidness).' 'Why is that? Śāriputra, all views arise from emptiness. Śāriputra, one who only views emptiness cannot be cured.' I have said. At the end of the extensive explanation, it is also said: 'For example, in order to eliminate disease, a doctor gives a patient a purgative medicine. If the medicine only stirs up the diseases without eliminating them, then the disease will not be cured from its root.' 'Similarly, if emptiness arises from abiding in dense views, that is the best. But if someone only views emptiness, that one cannot be cured, thus spoke the Victorious One.' The venerable Nāgārjuna also said: 'The Buddhas have declared emptiness to be the relinquishing of all views. Those who hold emptiness as a view are said to be incurable.' 'If one views emptiness incorrectly, those with little wisdom will be destroyed.' And so on, and also by clearly distinguishing between the two types of emptiness. In the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra (Descent into Lanka Sutra) and in the Madhyamaka-bhāvanākrama (Stages of Meditation on the Middle Way) by the venerable Nāgārjuna: 'One is unborn emptiness, one is born emptiness. Unborn emptiness is supreme, born emptiness is destructive.' The great Madhyamaka master, the venerable Asaṅga, also said: 'How does one wrongly grasp emptiness?' If any Śrāmaṇa (ascetic) or Brāhmaṇa (priest) does not accept what is empty, nor what is empty of what, that is called wrongly grasping emptiness. 'Why is that? Because it is reasonable that what is empty of what does not exist, and what is empty exists. If everything does not exist, then where, what, and of what would be empty? Therefore, it cannot be called emptiness.' Therefore, such a view is a wrong grasp of emptiness. 'How does one correctly grasp emptiness?' Because for what, what does not exist, therefore, one correctly sees it as empty. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
