Endowed with miraculous powers, endowed with light, causing battles between gods and asuras. Six hundred thousand kotis of Naga kings, together with their servants and retinues, gathered, emitting joyful radiance, and transformed the Naga king Varuna into a single white snake, prostrating and circumambulating three times, saying: "Compassionate Bodhisattva, I take refuge in you. Be the protector of all Nagas. If we break our vows, be the executioner of the Nagas." After saying this, they circled the trident three times, turned towards the Bodhisattva, uttered "PHUḤ PHUḤ," respectfully spat blood from their mouths, and remained there. The other Naga kings also joined their palms, circumambulated three times, and said: "Compassionate Bodhisattva, we take refuge in you. Please protect all the Nagas. If we break our vows, be the executioner of the Nagas." After saying this, they transformed the eight great Naga kings into a single white snake and entwined it around the Brahma cord. Those Naga kings also said: "We are your servants. We will listen to whatever you command." After saying this, the Nagas each returned to their own abodes. That Manjushri Bodhisattva is called "Compassionate Tamer of Nagas," and is also called "Healer of Heart Diseases." Manjushri, that great wisdom Bodhisattva of the past is none other than you, Manjushri Lion of Speech! The foremost compassionate Bodhisattva of that time is none other than the present Arya Avalokiteshvara Simhanada, the great leader of the Nagas. If it is not accomplished in twenty-one days, then Manjushri, the Great Compassionate One himself, has committed the five inexpiable sins. This is the word of the vow made by Manjushri, the Great Compassionate One himself. The harm of the Great King Manjushri will be liberated from the burning of heart disease by this dharani, and will be reborn in the Pure Land of Sukhavati in the next life. Manjushri, listen! Ninety-nine kotis of Buddhas, including Amitabha Buddha, have spoken this essence. oṃ āḥ hrīḥ siṃha nāda hūṃ phaṭ (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Roman transliteration, Chinese literal meaning) Now I myself say that by reciting this essence of the vidya-mantra once, one will be liberated from all sins. One will not go to bad rebirths. The body will not be pierced by weapons. One will not be reborn as a woman, and one will always remember past lives. After death, one will go to Sukhavati. Manjushri, the Tathagatas Vipashyin, Ushnishachakra, Sarvatrara, Lopakradada, Kanakamuni, and Kashyapa also spoke this secret mantra, and now I, Shakyamuni Buddha, will also speak it. Namo Ratna Trayaya! Namo Hayagrivaya! Namo Lokeshvaraya! Tadyatha: oṃ hrīḥ kuru yuru nila kandha, huru huru, tishtha tishtha, bandha bandha, maraya maraya, ha ha ha ha, vajra krodha hayagriva hrīḥ hūṃ phaṭ. Manjushri, this dharani is the mantra of the noble Avalokiteshvara, the lotus Hayagriva. The person who recites it once will be liberated from all sins, will cut off the gates of evil destinies, will not be harmed by nagas and other spirits, will be liberated from curses and poisons, this is the teaching of all Buddhas. It arises from the power of countless kotis, its qualities are immeasurable. Reciting it once eliminates sins, reciting it twice endows one with glory, reciting it three times exten
