Then, having heard those words, the heart of the Lord of the Gods, Indra, was greatly distressed, and he spoke thus to the son of the gods, Jewel Heart Immaculate: "Son of the gods, do not fear! There is one who will defeat the Lord of Death and liberate sentient beings from the suffering of hell. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the teacher of gods and humans in the world, the supreme physician who has transcended birth, old age, sickness, death, and sorrow. He is your refuge, your good medicine, your support, and like a father and mother. He is the guide who destroys all the evil destinies. Let us quickly go to where that guide resides." Then, at dawn, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, together with the son of the gods, Jewel Heart Immaculate, and thousands of gods and goddesses, went to where the Joyful One was, and having arrived where the Bhagavan was, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Bhagavan, circumambulated him three times, and then sat down before the Bhagavan. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, with humble words, beseeched the Bhagavan thus: "Bhagavan, the chief of the Yakshas of the gods, Star Face, has urged this son of the gods, Jewel Heart Immaculate, saying that this Jewel Heart Immaculate will become subject to the door of the Lord of Death within seven days. Bhagavan, how should we deal with this?" Then, the Bhagavan, the Tathagata Shakyamuni, having heard the words of the Lord of the Gods, Indra, smiled, and as he showed his smile, rays of light with many colors emanated from his mouth. The rays of light illuminated the realm of the three thousand great thousand worlds. The illumination of the rays of light made visible the abodes of all the gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, rakshasas, and bhutas, and urged them. Having urged them, the rays of light returned again, circumambulated the Bhagavan three times, and then entered the door of the Bhagavan's mouth. As soon as they entered, he spoke thus to the Lord of the Gods, Indra:

To. King of the Gods, listen to this: the immaculate essence of the jewel-hearted son of the gods will face the terrors of the Lord of Death's door in seven days! If death occurs at this time, one will experience immense and unbearable suffering, the suffering of sentient beings in hell. First, in the great city of Varanasi, one will be born as a flesh-eating, pig-headed ogress in the muddy backyard of a bamboo craftsman. In that backyard, one will eat excrement and urine. Within that backyard, hundreds of thousands of beings will reside, and they will devour the flesh of that sow at all times, leaving only bones. Then, again, through the power of karma, the body will be complete and live for seven years. Then death will occur. After that, one will be born in a monastery as a turtle, where even the name of water is not heard, nor is there any shade of trees. The sun scorches the body, one eats sand, and crows peck at the body, causing it to shatter into pieces. Then, again, through the power of karma, the body arises and decays, and this continues for five full years. Then death will occur, and in that very Varanasi, one will be born as a great fish in the great river. Then, again, through the power of karma, one will be thrown where there is no water, and that great body will be eaten by venomous snakes, crows, otters, dogs, leopards, bears, jackals, and so on. Various other creatures will also eat it. Then, again, through the power of karma, the body will arise and be eaten, and this will continue for three years. Then, again, having died, one will be born into seven households and experience the suffering of Jambudvipa. One will be born into the house of a leper, the house of the poor, the house of the foolish, the house of a butcher, the house of a low caste, the house of an outcaste, and the house of the blind, and thus one will experience suffering for sixty years. Having experienced those sufferings, one will then die and transmigrate, experiencing suffering for eighty-four eons in the sixteen great hells for sentient beings. King of the Gods, one will experience such great suffering! What

Even if one obtains a human body in a hundred rebirths, one will become poor, have incomplete limbs, have little wisdom, be illiterate, be separated from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, be despised by all the world, constantly feel thirsty, think of hunger in one's mind, be short-lived, and become prone to illness. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, having heard the inauspicious words of the son of the gods, Jewel Heart Immaculate, was extremely frightened before the Blessed One, and with an unhappy mind, he prayed thus: "Blessed One, I have become hopeless! I have no refuge to rely on!" The Blessed One said: "Lord of the gods, there is an antidote to the great punishment of the Lord of Death, therefore do not become hopeless. Thus, in the future life, at the time of death, those sentient beings will pass away peacefully at the time of death. Sentient beings will be completely liberated from all places of rebirth in hell and the animal realm. By merely remembering, all obscurations will be purified. One will become long-lived. One will obtain an extremely pure body." Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, and the Four Great Kings, Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara, bowed with folded palms towards where the Blessed One was, and prayed to the Blessed One thus: "Blessed One, please increase our hope! Blessed One, please protect all the gods! Blessed One, please liberate all sentient beings of the world! Blessed One, please pacify the fear of death! Blessed One, please eliminate the unbearable suffering of sentient beings in hell! Blessed One, please summon the Dharma King Yama! Blessed One, please allow the sentient beings of the four continents to breathe! Blessed One, please look upon the abode of the thirty-three gods! Blessed One, in the ten directions of the world, may all the Tathagatas of the ten directions seal with the great mudra of wisdom! Please bless with the blessings of the Tathagatas! Blessed One, for the sake of compassion for us, please explain the great antidote! Sugata, please explain."
