What is the ultimate? After asking this, the Bhagavan Vairochana said to Vajrapani: Vajrapani, well done, well done! Vajrapani, it is very good that you ask me this question. Therefore, listen and keep it well in mind, and I will explain it to you. The cause is the mind of enlightenment. The root is great compassion. The ultimate is skillful means. Secret Lord, what is enlightenment? It is to fully understand one's own mind as it is, and that is unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Secret Lord, there is not even a particle of dharma in it, nor can it be pointed out. Why is that? Because the nature of enlightenment is like space, there is no one who makes it enlightenment, nor is there anything to be enlightened. Why is that? Because enlightenment has no nature. Secret Lord, all dharmas are also without nature, just like the nature of space. Then, Vajrapani again asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, from where can one fully seek omniscience? Through what can one realize perfect Buddhahood? The Bhagavan replied: Secret Lord, enlightenment and omniscience should be fully sought from one's own mind. Why is that? Because the mind is naturally completely pure, it is not inside, nor outside, nor can it be pointed out in between. Secret Lord, that mind has not been seen by the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfect Buddhas, nor will it be seen, it is not blue, not yellow, not red, not white, not light brown, not the color of crystal, not short, not long, not round, not square, not bright, not dark, not male, not female, nor hermaphrodite. Secret Lord, that mind is not the nature of the desire realm, not the nature of the form realm, nor the nature of the formless realm. Gods and, nagas and, yakshas and, gandharvas and, asuras and, space

Ḍiṅ and, human or non-human (mī'am ci, deva) and, great belly crawler (lto 'phye chen po, great python) and, human and, non-human sentient beings are not of the same nature. Secret Lord, that mind does not abide in the eye, is not the ear, is not the nose, is not the tongue, is not the body, does not abide in the mind. Why is that? The mind is of the nature of space, therefore it is free from all concepts and all kinds of concepts. Why is that? Whatever is the nature of space, that is the nature of mind. Whatever is the nature of mind, that is the nature of enlightenment. Secret Lord, thus mind and, the realm of space and, enlightenment, these three are non-dual, they cannot be made into two. Moreover, it has the root of compassion, and is completely grasped by the perfection of skillful means. Secret Lord, therefore, even with these various names, like this I Whatever Dharma is taught in the retinue of the Bodhisattva, it should be understood that it is all for the purpose of completely purifying the mind of enlightenment and for completely understanding the mind. Secret Lord, therefore, a son or daughter of a lineage who wishes to fully understand enlightenment should fully understand their own mind. Secret Lord, how can one fully understand one's own mind? Like this, in form, or in color, or in shape, or in place, or in form, or in feeling, or in perception, or in formation, or in consciousness, or in self, or in what belongs to self, or in what is to be grasped, or in what grasps, or in purity, or in impurity, or in realm, or in source, even if one searches completely in all aspects, it cannot be found. Secret Lord, this is the gate of complete purification of the mind of enlightenment of the Bodhisattva, called the gate of the appearance of Dharma, it is the first way of the appearance of Dharma. By abiding in this, Bodhisattvas will obtain the samadhi of abandoning all obscurations with little effort, and having obtained this, Bodhisattvas will obtain the state of walking together with all Buddhas. They will also obtain the five superknowledges, and will also obtain the dharani of infinite sounds, tones and melodies, as well as following and knowing the minds of sentient beings, and being blessed and surrounded by all the Tathagatas.
