If one fully understands all aspects of conducive and adverse conditions, then one should diligently practice these four types of diligence. By meditating on mindfulness, having fully understood all aspects of conducive and adverse conditions, in order to fully understand the conducive aspects and in order to fully understand the adverse aspects, one should also diligently practice the four types of diligence, that is, in order to abandon the arising sinful and unwholesome dharmas, as extensively explained above. What is called abiding in action itself is for the sake of fully understanding all meanings therein. For the sake of abandoning the five faults and relying on the eight activities, therefore, through complete knowledge, by the meditation of diligence, the mind abides in the action itself. The four legs of miraculous power are abiding as the cause for the complete increase of all meanings, which here should be understood as the samadhi of the mind. Then, at the end of complete abandonment, that leg of miraculous power is also action itself, and it is to be understood by abandoning the five faults and meditating on the eight activities. What are the five faults? The Blessed One said: They are laziness, non-awareness, drowsiness, sinking, and agitation. Non-initiation and initiation, these five are called abandoning the five faults. Among them, agitation and sinking create one fault. Non-initiation is a fault at the time when agitation and sinking arise. In order to pacify what has been initiated, how should these be abandoned, and how should the eight activities be arranged? With four, laziness is abandoned, that is, aspiration, effort, faith, and pliancy; these should also be understood in order. The place and then the abiding, and its sign and fruit itself, the place is aspiration, the abiding is effort, the sign of that abiding aspiration is faith, that is, trust, belief, and desire. The fruit of that abiding effort is pliancy, and the distinction of the samadhi of diligence with aspiration should be understood. The remaining four activities to be abandoned are mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity, corresponding to the four faults in number.
