I, the people of the small kingdoms unanimously said, even if we stab our own bodies with knives and gouge out our own eyes, we would not dare to leave a scar on the body of the supreme king. Then the king became unhappy and said: Now I seem to have become a lonely person, among so many attendants, is there no one who will become my friend? At that time, the king summoned an executioner of low caste, naturally irritable, and feared by everyone. The executioner came. After the executioner came, he said to the princes: Do not be sad. I have a way to prevent the great king from getting his wish. If it cannot be fulfilled, the king's throne can be seized as before. When the princes heard these words, great joy arose in their hearts. Then the executioner came to the king and reported: Great King, what do you intend to do now? The king said: I want to light a thousand butter lamps on my body and offer them to the great Brahmin teacher. The executioner said: In that case, you can cut on your body. When the king heard these words, great joy arose in his heart, and he said to the executioner: You are truly my true friend in attaining unsurpassed Bodhi. Then the executioner stood in front of the king, and with a loud voice of sobbing and weeping, he reported to the king: Does the king know? With the method of killing people, the head must be cut off first, the neck must be cut off, and the hands and feet must be separated, and the intestines and tendons must be pulled out, then can the great king endure such pain and suffering? When the king heard these words, great joy arose in his heart. Then the executioner took a knife like a cow's tongue, and before long, he cut a thousand complete wounds on the king's body. The executioner thought that the king's heart would waver, but his heart did not waver, so he threw the knife on the ground and ran away. Then, in the thousand wounds cut on the great king's body, ghee was poured, good cotton wicks were inserted, and a thousand butter lamps were lit. At that time, the great Brahmin teacher saw this and thought to himself, if I don't quickly preach the Dharma now, can my body and life be preserved?

Because life is impermanent, thinking, 'If (the king's) life does not revive, who will listen to the Dharma?' he said to the king, 'Desiring to hear the Buddha's Dharma, with extremely brave diligence, practice difficult practices. Please listen well and keep it in mind. Now I will explain the Buddha's Dharma to the king.' Hearing this, the king's heart was filled with joy, like a filial son who is extremely unhappy when his parents die, tormented by suffering, and how happy the son is when his parents are revived, the king was also so happy. Then, that Brahmin said to the king: 'If there is birth, there will be death. Cessation is happiness.' He taught this half verse. After the king heard the holy Dharma, his heart was filled with joy, and he announced to the princes and ministers: 'If you have a loving heart for me, do not forget this Dharma, keep it in mind, and in the country, wherever there is a place where many people gather, villages, cities, and markets, you must announce to the people: The great Chakravartin king, in order to save the many sentient beings who are drowning in the sea of suffering, and having generated great compassion for all sentient beings, lit a thousand lamps on his body, and hearing this half verse, in order to accomplish the loving-kindness and compassion of this great king, everyone should write, recite, inquire, become familiar with it, keep its meaning in mind, and diligently practice it as it is said.' At that time, many people heard this announcement and were very happy and satisfied. Everyone praised the king in unison and were very happy. The great king is truly our father of great compassion! For the sake of all sentient beings, he has practiced extremely difficult practices!' Everyone praised in this way, and everyone wrote (these words) on paper, silk, bark, wood, and stone, and learned to recite them. They also wrote (these words) in places where many people gather, so that everyone could see them.
