In a certain place, (Ananda) encountered a retinue of the six heretical teachers, a naked ascetic, (who) reported in detail, "They spoke harsh words to me." At that time, the Blessed One smiled, and from his mouth emanated light of various colors, illuminating the eastern direction, revealing a world called "Supreme" beyond countless hundreds of thousands of kotis of Buddha-fields. In that world, there was a Buddha named "Joyful King," the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Vidyacharana-sampanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara-purushadamyasarathi, Shasta Devamanushyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan, residing in a Buddha-field called "Well-Adorned." That Buddha-field was very level, the ground made of lapis lazuli, with patterns drawn with pure gold, and seven kinds of precious trees growing. Those trees were about an arrow-shot high, adorned with flowers, fruits, branches, and leaves. When a gentle breeze blew, they produced beautiful sounds. Each being who heard these sounds would not tire of them. From time to time, there were springs, lakes, and bathing ponds, filled with water possessing eight qualities. The bottom of the ponds was covered with golden sand. The four sides of the ponds were covered with fragrant lotuses, pundarika flowers, parushaka flowers, and other blue, yellow, red, and white flowers, the size of chariot wheels, covering the entire surface of the water. In the water, various kinds of birds made very pleasant and melodious sounds. In the ponds, there were boats made of seven kinds of precious materials, in which many beings played and enjoyed themselves at will. Between those precious trees, lion thrones, each one yojana in height, were arranged, adorned with seven kinds of precious materials. Divine garments were laid on the thrones in order, divine incense filled the air, and divine flowers were scattered all over. The Tathagata Joyful King sat on the throne in the vajra posture, surrounded by immeasurable Bodhisattvas.

Tens of thousands of people, arranging their robes before (the Buddha), joined their palms in reverence and individually beseeched the Thus-Gone-One with consistent words, saying: "World Honored One, for what reason, what cause, does this excellent light, possessing blue, yellow, red, and white colors, being extremely bright and incomparable, appear from the western direction to these many retinues? All those who are touched by the light experience ease in body and mind. For the sake of compassion, please, World Honored One, explain this." To this, the World Honored One spoke thus: "Noble sons, listen well and keep it firmly in mind, and I shall explain and tell you. From here towards the west, beyond countless hundreds of thousands of millions of world realms, there exists a Buddha-field called 'Enduring.' There, a Buddha named Shakyamuni is the Thus-Gone-One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, Knower of the World, the Supreme Guide for Taming Beings, the Unequaled Teacher, the Conqueror, the Buddha, the World Honored One, surrounded by a vast retinue. He teaches the Sutras of Great Skillful Means for repaying kindness to all the retinue, for the sake of benefiting and bringing happiness to all sentient beings, in order to completely eradicate the thorns of wrong views from all sentient beings, in order to make the initial Bodhisattvas irreversible and steadfast on the path to enlightenment, in order to place all Hearers and Solitary Realizers on the path of the ultimate One Vehicle, in order for the great Bodhisattvas to quickly manifest enlightenment and repay the kindness of the Buddhas, in order to make all sentient beings remember the heavy kindness, in order to liberate all sentient beings from the ocean of suffering, and in order for all ordinary individuals to desire to serve their parents, this light has appeared." At that time, within that assembly, Bodhisattvas who were the leaders and teachers of the numerous retinues, tens of thousands of them, arose from their seats, bared one shoulder, knelt on their right knees, and beseeched the World Honored One thus:
