Leaning on their canes, they stood on one leg. Then, the prince's gatekeeper went into the palace and reported that some Brahmins had arrived outside. They were leaning on their canes, standing on one leg, and saying, 'We have come here specifically to beg from a long way away.' The prince was very happy to hear these words and immediately went out to greet them and pay his respects. Just like a father and son meeting, they greeted each other with affectionate words, asking, 'Where have you come from? Were you tired on the way? What do you want?' Then he asked them why they were standing on one leg. The eight Brahmins said, 'We have heard that you, Prince, are very fond of giving, and that you will not go against the wishes of anyone who begs from you. The prince's virtues are known in all directions, from the sky above to the depths of the earth below. Your merit of giving is inconceivable. People near and far are praising and proclaiming it. There is nothing that has not been heard or is not known. Everyone is telling the truth. Now that you have become a son of the gods, the words of the gods cannot be false. Now, if you, Prince, do not give, will you go against our wishes? We have come to beg you, Prince, for a cotton elephant that can walk on lotuses.' After speaking, the prince led them to the cotton elephant shed and gave them another cotton elephant. The eight Brahmins said, 'We want the cotton elephant that can walk on lotuses.' The prince said, 'This cotton elephant is cherished and given to me by my father, the king. He considers this cotton elephant to be no different from myself, so I cannot give it to you. If I give it to you, it will go against my father's wishes, and I may even be banished from the country because of this cotton elephant.' The prince thought to himself, 'I vowed before that I would not go against the wishes of anyone who begged from me. Now, if I go against my previous vow and do not give, how can I perfect the unsurpassed, equal, and complete perfection of giving?'

It will not change. If this is given as alms, thinking that it will become the mind of unsurpassed and equal almsgiving. The prince then said this. It is very difficult, but it must be given as alms, he said. He then ordered the servant standing beside him to quickly bring the woolly elephant adorned with gold and silver saddles. After the woolly elephant was brought, the prince held the water vessel in his left hand and washed the hands of the Brahmins. With his right hand, he held the nose rope of the woolly elephant and gave it to the eight Brahmins. The eight Brahmins prayed for the prince. As soon as the prayer was finished, the woolly elephant shook its body and walked away happily. Then the prince again instructed those Brahmins, saying: You go quickly! If the father king hears, do not delay, he will come to snatch it away. At that time, those Brahmins immediately left quickly. When the ministers heard that the prince had given the woolly elephant to the enemy, they were all frightened and fell from the throne, overwhelmed by sorrow. Thinking, this country relies on this woolly elephant. Now it has been given to other enemies, thinking this, they went to the king and reported: The prince has given the precious woolly elephant that can defeat foreign enemies to the enemy on the other side. The king was very unhappy to hear this. The minister also reported: Now that the king possesses this woolly elephant, the regime is strong. This woolly elephant has the strength of sixty woolly elephants, but the prince has given it to the enemy. If the enemy obtains it, I am afraid that the regime will be lost. What should be done? Giving alms at will like this, I am afraid that the treasury will be exhausted, and even the country's regime, consorts, and princes will be given away as alms. The king was even more unhappy to hear these words. He summoned another minister and asked him if it was true that the prince had given the woolly elephant to the enemy. That minister also reported that it was true. The king then said
