The Sutra of the Noble Prince Siddhartha. The Sutra of the Noble Prince Siddhartha. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Noble Prince Siddhartha. Volume One. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti, together with countless monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. At that time, the Blessed One smiled and emitted rays of five colors from his mouth. The venerable Ananda rose from his seat, arranged his robe, and, with palms joined, said to the Blessed One: "I have attended the Buddha for twenty years, and I have never seen such a smile. Does the Blessed One contemplate the Buddhas of the past, future, or present? If not, please explain the reason for your smile." The Blessed One said to Ananda: "I am not contemplating the Buddhas of the past, future, or present. But I remember that in the past, beyond countless eons, I contemplated giving and the objects of giving. At that time, in a place called Yava, there was a king named Goodness, who ruled the country with righteous laws and governed many beings. That king had four thousand ministers, who were empowered to rule sixty small kingdoms. There were eight hundred great cities and five hundred woolly elephants. The king had twenty thousand consorts, but no son. Therefore, they worshipped the powerful gods of the mountains and rivers, praying that the sacred consort would bear a son. The consort's bedding, food, and drink, and other necessities were carefully selected and prepared, and the king himself attended to them. After ten months, a prince was born. The twenty thousand consorts in the palace were all delighted to hear that a prince had been born. Milk flowed naturally, so the prince was named Siddhartha (义成, Don Grub). Four people were appointed to nurse and care for the prince: one to nurse him, one to carry him, one to bathe him, and one to...

He was appointed to the task of going to Labutse (place name). After being appointed in this way, when the prince turned sixteen, he learned everything, including writing, arithmetic, archery, craftsmanship, and music, etc. He served his father and mother like deities. The king also built a separate palace for the prince. From a young age, the prince loved giving, and he delighted in the happiness of all sentient beings, from humans to deer and birds. He also said in his words that foolish people who do not understand do not like giving, they deceive themselves and there is no benefit in it. Wise and intelligent people, although they live in the world, greatly value the merits of giving. By giving, all the Buddhas who have passed away in the past, who have not yet come in the future, and who are now abiding, as well as the solitary Buddhas and the noble Arhats, will all praise and commend. As the prince gradually grew up, he married a king's daughter named Mande, who had a beautiful and dignified appearance, was unparalleled in the world, and was adorned with ornaments of gold, silver, beryl, and various jewels. They had a son and a daughter. After that, the prince began to contemplate the meaning of the perfection of giving. He said to his father, the king, "I want to go out for sightseeing and amusement." The king also agreed. Then, when the prince came out of the palace, Indra, the lord of the gods, transformed poor, blind, deaf, and mute beggars and made them stay at the city gates, roads, and streets. When the prince saw them, he immediately returned to the palace, oppressed by great sorrow and sitting unhappily. The father king said to the prince, "Why are you unhappy and sorrowful when I sent you out for sightseeing and amusement?" The prince reported to his father king, "When I went out for sightseeing and amusement, I met many beggars who were blind, deaf, and mute, and I was oppressed by sorrow. I ask my father king for one request, will you grant it?" The father king also said, "Prince, whatever you desire...

He commanded, 'Speak, and I will grant it.' The prince then addressed his royal father, saying, 'I desire to pile up the jewels and treasures from the treasury that you, my royal father, possess, at the four gates of the city and in the marketplace, and to bestow them upon all beggars without contradicting their wishes.' The king then commanded his son, the prince, 'Whatever pleases you, I will grant it without contradicting your wishes.' Then, the prince commanded the ministers to transport the wealth and jewels by carts and pile them up at the four gates of the city and in the marketplace, and to give alms according to the desires of others. The prince's virtues became renowned throughout the eight regions of the land, so that some came from a hundred yojanas, some from a thousand yojanas, and some from beyond ten thousand yojanas. To those who desired food and drink, he gave food and drink; to those who desired clothing and garments, he gave clothing and garments; and to those who desired gold, silver, and jewels, he gave whatever they desired, without contradicting their wishes, and there was nothing that he did not give. At that time, in that era, there was a hostile kingdom that heard that the prince delighted in giving alms and completely gave whatever others desired without contradicting their wishes. They gathered the ministers and wise, intelligent scholars and deliberated, saying, 'The king of the Yava country has a felt elephant that walks on lotuses, named Sudaya, which is very strong. Whenever they fight with other hostile kingdoms, that felt elephant always wins. Which of you can go there and beg for it?' After deliberation, none of the ministers could go. Then, eight Brahmins addressed the king, saying, 'If we go to beg, please prepare our retinue and provisions.' The king prepared their retinue and provisions and commanded the Brahmins, 'If you bring back that felt elephant, I will give you a great reward.' Thus, he made a vow. Then, the eight Brahmins, carrying staffs, crossed mountains and valleys and went to the country of Yava. Having arrived in that country, they came to the gate of the king.
