They gathered to watch in the charnel ground of the cool grove. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and tell the monks, 'The Blessed One wishes to walk and go to the charnel ground, so those of you who wish to see something wonderful should go.' Then, after a while, the Blessed One, attended by the Venerable Ajnata Kaundinya, Vashpa, Mahanama, Bhadrika, Shariputra, Maudgalyayana, Kashyapa, Ananda, Nanda, and other great Shravakas, went to the charnel ground of the cool grove. The crowd of people also saw the Blessed One and opened the way. Then, the physician Jivaka cut open the right breast of that woman. Then, that child was born by himself, with white hair and limbs full of wrinkles, all parts of his body having become aged, his senses dulled, emaciated, and with little strength. Then, as soon as he was born, he looked at those crowds and said: O lamas, or those like lamas, parents, Khenpos, or Acharyas, do not speak harsh words. Just as I have been in my mother's womb, between the stomach and the intestines, for sixty years, experiencing such suffering, he said, and then remained silent. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, in this way, even a being in its last existence will experience such suffering, so be content with all births in existence. Be content with all the things of birth in existence. Then, the Blessed One said to that child: Child, are you old? Blessed One, I am old. Child, are you old? Sugata, I am old. Then, from that basis, his name was called 'Old Man.' Then, from that basis, the Blessed One taught such Dharma. Having heard it, many hundreds of beings became disgusted and attained great distinction. That old man also stayed in the house for ten years, and when he reached the age of seventy, he went forth into the teachings of the Blessed One, and became...

On the Vulture Peak Mountain of Corpses, they vowed to spend the summer retreat together with twenty-five monks. Then, the abbot of the Sangha made a rule there, saying that as long as they remained as ordinary beings, no one should create divisions. After some time, when three months had passed, twenty-four monks had attained the state of Arhat, but the elder alone remained abiding in the state of an ordinary being. Then, the abbot of the Sangha, during the process of creating divisions, very strictly forbade it eight times and expelled him from the Sangha. Then, he took up weapons, entered deep into his room, and weeping, uttered lamentations in various ways, saying: All the forests have been set ablaze, and the mountains have already turned yellow, yet still, the sinful mind has not been liberated. The sound of the spring waters has also subsided, and the flowing rivers are also drying up, yet still, the sinful mind has not been liberated. These birds born from eggs, even their faint chirping sounds have become weak, yet still, the sinful mind has not been liberated. The leaves of these forests have turned yellow, and the branches of the trees have withered, yet still, the sinful mind has not been liberated. The abbots residing in the valleys have already departed in various directions, yet still, the sinful mind has not been liberated. Remaining as an ordinary being, how shall I go before the Teacher? What is the use of living meaninglessly? Let me pierce myself with a weapon, he said, and left. At that time, there was nothing that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, did not know, did not see, did not understand, or did not comprehend. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, possessed great compassion, were engaged in benefiting the world, possessed a singular protector, were uniquely brave, incomparable, did not speak in two ways, abided in quiescence and insight, manifested the three knowledges, were well-trained in the three trainings, were skilled in the three bases of discipline, had crossed the four rivers, had feet with extremely firm soles of the four miraculous legs, had long been familiar with the four objects of gathering, were fearless with the four fearlessnesses, and were the true lion's roar of the supreme.
