Out of fear, I turned to the embrace of loving-kindness, and in this way, he subdued five hundred kinds of nagas and five hundred kinds of sky-soarers. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, among my disciples who abide without afflictions, the foremost is this son of good family, Subhuti." Then the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable one, what deeds did the venerable Subhuti perform that he is shown to be the foremost of those who abide without afflictions?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, Subhuti himself, in other past lives, accumulated merits and possessed the complete conditions, arising like a raging flood, and performed and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by demons. How could those deeds done and accumulated by Subhuti himself be experienced by someone else? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated do not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor do they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will ripen only in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings will not be exhausted even in hundreds of eons. When the collection [of causes] occurs and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in the past age, in this very fortunate eon, when the life of beings was twenty thousand years, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly and Fully Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Blissful One, the Knower of the World, the Supreme Guide of Beings to be Tamed, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light-Protector, appeared in the world. He would dwell in the Deer Park where the hermits speak in the city of Varanasi. Then, he went forth there, and by giving charity and supreme charity, he guarded the state of pure conduct for ten thousand years, and made the aspiration: 'By this root of virtue, the generation of the mind [of enlightenment], and the complete giving of the Dharma of giving, may I in the future become the Blessed One Light-Protector.'

The Brahmin boy said to the master: Brahmin boy, you prophesied that when the life span of beings reaches one hundred years, there will appear the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha Shakyamuni. I wish to be ordained in that Dharma and become the supreme of those who are without afflictions. What kind of actions cause one to be born as a Naga? It is not abandoning afflictions, the senses being confused, not ultimately completing the paths of action, generating hatred towards monks who are learners and non-learners, and uttering words such as "venomous snake," therefore one is born as a Naga. He gave charity and excellent charity, and guarded the conduct of purity, therefore now he has directly realized the state of Arhat, and has shown the supreme state of those who are without afflictions. Monks, therefore, actions that are definitely black will definitely have a result that is also black. Actions that are definitely white will definitely have a result that is also white. Mixed actions will also have a mixed result. Monks, therefore, you should abandon actions that are definitely black and mixed actions, and only dedicate yourselves to actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. Having obtained food, meals, bedding, cushions, treatment for illnesses, and medicines, he resided at the Bamboo Grove Kalandaka in Rajagriha, together with the monastic community of Shravakas. At that time, in Rajagriha, there lived a wealthy merchant, rich in possessions and great in enjoyment, with vast and extensive holdings, possessing the wealth of Vaishravana, rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from the same lineage, and together with her, he played and rejoiced, enjoying happiness and delight. As he played and rejoiced with her, enjoying happiness and delight, his wife became pregnant, but did not give birth to a child. After some time, he continued to play and rejoice with her, enjoying happiness and delight. As he played and rejoiced, enjoying happiness and delight, while the first child remained in the womb, after some time, ten children were born to her, one after another, but the first child remained in the womb. Then, after some time, the wife of that householder became ill, and although she was treated with medicines from roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, the illness did not subside. When she was struck by a fatal illness and was near death, she said to her family, "Masters, be aware that my first child is inside. When I die, please cut open my right side with a weapon and extract the first child." Having said this, she spoke: "All accumulations will eventually be exhausted. All that is high will eventually fall. All meetings will eventually end in separation. All that lives will eventually die." Having said this, she died. After she died, they decorated the coffin with blue, yellow, red, and white cloths, carried it to the charnel ground in the cool grove, and summoned the king of physicians, Jivaka. In the city streets of Rajagriha, the following sound was heard: "A certain woman has been pregnant for many years, and although she has given birth to ten other children, the first child remains in the womb. Now, the king of physicians, Jivaka, will cut open the belly of the deceased and extract the first child who is in the womb." After the sound spread, countless beings and the six teachers, including the Perfected Ones...
