Thus, he obtained the possessions of a Bhikṣu. Having thus renounced, through diligence, practice, and effort, he realized that this wheel of the five-eyed Saṃsāra was wavering and unstable, and thus determined that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, decline, dissipation, and destruction. Having abandoned all afflictions, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. As an Arhat, he became free from the desires of the three realms, possessing a mind that equated gold and dung, and was no different from the sky and the palm of his hand. He became as cool as if soaked in sandalwood, having shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and having obtained wisdom, supernormal knowledge, and individual correct knowledge. He did not look to worldly gain, attachment, and reverence, and became a place where the gods, along with their retinues, worshipped, revered, and spoke with respect. Then, the Blessed One addressed the Bhikṣus, saying: "Bhikṣus, among my Śrāvaka Bhikṣus, the foremost of those who dwell in solitude is this Bhikṣu Protector of the Land." Then, the Bhikṣus became doubtful, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable One, what deeds did the Protector of the Land perform that he was born into a wealthy family, with a beautiful and pleasing appearance, and also attained Arhatship after renouncing?" The Blessed One replied: "Bhikṣus, the Protector of the Land himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and possessed favorable conditions, appearing like a victorious advance, and performed and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by demons. How could others experience the deeds done and accumulated by the Protector of the Land himself? Bhikṣus, the deeds done and accumulated do not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor do they ripen in the realms of water, fire, and wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings will not be lost even for hundreds of kalpas. When the conditions gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit."

Will not change again. Monks, in the distant past, King Lusheng's palace retinue was invaded by foreign enemies. Not knowing what to do, they entered the forest. At noon, they were tormented by the scorching heat of the sun, and wandered around with the army, unable to find a way out. When the Buddhas do not appear in the world, the Pratyekabuddhas have compassion for the poor and distressed, live in remote dwellings, and appear in the world as the sole objects of offering. Soon, a Pratyekabuddha lived on a quiet road. He generated compassion, pointed out the road to King Lusheng, and also indicated the water source, thus saving the lives of the king and his retinue. After that, the king generated faith, invited him to his city, and served him with all necessities for three months. After Nirvana, he also built a stupa for his remains and made a vow: May I also obtain such merits through this root of virtue, aspiration, and complete giving of the Dharma. May I be able to please the teachers who are far superior to this, and may I not displease them. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? The king at that time was this Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Monks, Dhṛtarāṣṭra also did other karmas and accumulated them. In this Bhadrakalpa, when the lifespan of beings reaches 20,000 years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Vidyācaraṇasaṃpanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara-puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Kāśyapa Drinking Light) will appear in the world, and he will reside in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in the city of Varanasi. At that time, the city of Varanasi was ruled by King Kṛkī. During his reign, there was wealth, prosperity, happiness, good harvests, people, and a large population.

Full of grain, disputes and battles subsided, riots and civil wars subsided, there were no thieves and famines and diseases, possessing rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo, because possessing the Dharma, the Dharma king ruled according to the Dharma. Then, his youngest son went to speak to a sage, and he saw the Buddha Bhagavan, whose body was perfectly adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great man, beautified with the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a walking mountain of jewels, all good, and as soon as he saw him, he became delighted in the Bhagavan. Having arisen joy, he bowed to the feet of the Bhagavan with his head, and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan Light-Protector taught him the Dharma, and he arose faith, and served and revered the Bhagavan Light-Protector and his retinue, and took refuge, and took the precepts. After completely passing into nirvana, he also hung a small umbrella on the stupa. Monks, what do you think? Who was it who became the king's son at that time and in that age? It is this Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Dhṛtarāṣṭra also did other deeds and accumulated them. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there lived a Brahmin who made a living by digging roots. Once, he went to dig roots and wandered around in the forest, and there he saw a sick Pratyekabuddha. Then, he arose faith, and served and revered him, and when his illness was cured, he also offered food, and prayed: May I also obtain such merits! May I please a teacher who is even more excellent than this! May I not displease him. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? Who was it who became the root-digging Brahmin at that time and in that age? It is this Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Due to the maturation of that karma, he never experienced suffering in samsara, and now he is also of the royal lineage.
