After those people exhaled, they satisfied the ascetics, Brahmins, the destitute, and the suffering. The retinue of five hundred merchants, having deeply believed in the teachings of the Blessed One, went forth into homelessness. Through diligence, practice, and effort, they realized that this wheel of the five-eyed cycle of existence is wavering and unstable. They determined that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, decline, dissolution, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, they directly realized the state of Arhatship. The Arhats, having become free from the desires of the three realms, were equal to gold and potsherds. They possessed minds like the sky and the palm of the hand, cooled like sandalwood soaked in water. They shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom. They attained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual self-realization. They did not look to worldly gains, attachments, or honors. They became objects of worship, remembrance, and respectful praise by the gods, including those with power and their attendants. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable One, it is wondrous that the Blessed One has spared the lives of these five hundred merchants, including those on the ocean, and completely rescued them from poverty, placing them in the ultimate state of peace, Nirvana!" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, now that I am free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, free from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and agitation, having become all-knowing, all-seeing, and having attained mastery over all wisdom and objects of knowledge, what is so wondrous about my having spared the lives of these five hundred merchants, including those on the ocean, and completely rescued them from poverty, placing them in the ultimate state of peace, Nirvana? He was compassionate, magnanimous, desired the Dharma, loved beings, and protected the impoverished. Then, once, five hundred merchants from Varanasi wanted to go to sea. They gradually went to the seashore, saw the hermit, and with faith arose, prostrated at his feet and prayed: O Bhagavan, if we encounter any misfortune after going to sea, please protect us. The hermit agreed and said: So be it. Then, those merchants took jewels and set off for Jambudvipa. Later, once, a black Rakshasa wind raged everywhere, and the hermit protected them.
