From there, the magistrate of Mod was completely and peacefully abiding. Then, the Blessed One gave him the teaching of mindfulness, and through diligence, practice, and effort, he realized that this wheel of the five-eyed cycle was shaking and unstable, thereby thoroughly understanding that the nature of all conditioned phenomena is decay, fall, dissipation, and destruction. He abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from the desires of the three realms, regarded gold and dung as equal, possessed an equanimity of mind equal to the sky and the palm of his hand, became cool like sandalwood soaked in water, destroyed the shell of the egg with wisdom, obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, turned his back on worldly gain, attachment, and reverence, and became an object of offering, awe, and reverence by all beings, including the gods and their retinues. Although he had already attained the state of an Arhat, he still delighted in evil deeds. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, just like this, my monk Dung Pit is the foremost among my Shravaka monks who delight in evil deeds. Then, the monks arose with doubt, and in order to dispel all doubt, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable, what deeds did the resident monk of the Dung Pit do, that he suffers such pain? The Blessed One said: Monks, the monk of the Dung Pit himself, in other past lives, accumulated the resources and possessed the conditions, and did and accumulated those deeds that come like a flood and cannot be avoided. How could the deeds done and accumulated by the monk of the Dung Pit himself be borne by someone else? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realms of water, fire, and wind, but the deeds of good and non-virtue will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings, even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, will not disappear; when the causes and conditions come together, and the time is ripe, the fruit will manifest itself.

Monks, in the past, in this Fortunate Aeon, when beings lived for forty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Guide of Beings to be Tamed, Unsurpassed, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Krakucchanda appeared in the world, residing in a royal palace called Beautiful. At that time, in that royal palace, a householder built a monastery, thinking that monks from various directions and lands would come and go and stay there. In that monastery lived an ordinary monk, who was very stingy with the dwelling. When he saw newly arrived monks, he would get angry, quarrel, harbor malice, be sullen, and create disputes. When he saw monks leaving that monastery, he would be very happy, extremely happy to see them off, and would talk to them. Later, an Arhat monk came from a certain place. The owner of the monastery would not return, and he knew from his behavior that he was an Arhat. Then he was filled with joy, and the next day he invited the Sangha of monks to bathe and have a meal with proper ceremony. The original monk was not there, but after a while, the next day after the bathing and meal were prepared, the original monk also came. He went to the bathing place and saw the owner of the monastery serving the newly arrived monk. Then he became jealous, and with a hateful mind spoke harsh words: "Monk, it is not right for you to accept the offerings of such a patron with an impure body." Then the Arhat thought, if I become even more unfortunate because of this affliction, it would not be good, so he accepted it without saying anything. After a while, when everyone had gathered and it was approaching noon, the monk

It is heard that a beggar said to an Arhat, "You have generated a mind of hatred." Having heard this, he felt remorse. Then he prostrated at the feet of that Arhat monk, saying, "Venerable one, please forgive the harsh words I spoke to you." Then, in order to generate faith in him, that Arhat rose into the sky and displayed various kinds of miracles. Then he felt even more remorse. Then he confessed and repented of the faults of his actions before him, and cleansed them with a whip. However, he was unable to generate ultimate wisdom. Then, after some time, when the time of death approached, he made the aspiration: "May I not experience the ripening of the karma of having generated a mind of hatred towards the Arhat, and of having spoken harsh words. May the ripening of the karma of my reading, reciting, giving of alms and great alms, and serving the Sangha, please the Buddha, the Bhagavan, in the future." Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that moment, the monk who was the basis was this very dung heap. Because he spoke harsh words to the Arhat, he experienced endless suffering in samsara. Due to the remaining residue of that karma, even when he reached his final existence, he became so foul and exceedingly foul, delighting in impurity and filth. His reciting, his mastery of the aggregates, his mastery of the elements, his mastery of the sense bases, his mastery of dependent origination, and his mastery of what is and is not possible, therefore he went forth in my teaching, abandoned all defilements, and directly realized the state of Arhat. Monks, therefore, we should train ourselves in this way: we should strive to abandon miserliness. Why is that? Because the faults of the various beings who have become dung heaps will not occur, and the accumulation of qualities by which he attained the state of Arhat will become like this. Monk, you should train yourself in this way.
