There was a leader of a herd of deer, possessing thousands of attendants, who was wise, clear, and kind-hearted. That herd of deer was watched by hunters and reported to the king. Then, the king, equipped with a four-membered army, brought all those deer herds under his control. Then, the leader of the herd thought to himself: If I do not protect these now, then today these will be completely annihilated. Then, the leader of the herd looked around, thinking: From which direction will these herds of deer be able to escape? He saw a river flowing in that mountain valley. That river was swift and violently carrying away, and those deer were all weak. Then, the leader of the herd, without hesitation, entered into the middle of that river and stood there, calling out: Come here, jump from this bank, step on my back with your feet and legs, and go to the other bank. By this method, you will be seen to be saved; if you do not do so, you will die! Then, those deer did just that. Then, as they stepped on its back with their hooves, the skin broke, and only flesh, blood, and remnants of bone remained. However, it felt compassion for those deer and did not give up its effort. Then, after all the deer had crossed, it thought: Is there anyone here who has not crossed yet? Looking back, it saw that there was still one young deer that had not crossed. Then, the leader of the herd, while explaining the key points and dissecting the details, without regard for his own life, came to the bank, let the young deer ride on his back, crossed the river, and placed it on the bank. Seeing that those herds of deer had all crossed, he made a prayer at the time of his death: Just as I have saved these deer and this young deer, without regard for life, saving them from danger, may I, in the future, when I attain the unexcelled, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment, also liberate beings from the clutches of samsara. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that

I am the leader of the deer herd. The deer are the inhabitants of the city of Kushinagara. That fawn is none other than Rabzang (贤护). Then, the monks became doubtful. To dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed One Buddha: "Venerable Rabzang, what deeds did he do to become the last of the manifest Shravakas?" The Blessed One said: "Monks, Rabzang himself, in other past lives, accumulated merits and possessed the completed causes. He appears like a breach in a dam. Because he did and accumulated deeds that would not be devoured by demons, how could anyone else experience the deeds done and accumulated by Rabzang? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external earth element, nor will they ripen in the water element, fire element, or wind element. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings, Will not be wasted even in hundreds of kalpas. When the accumulation and time arrive, They will ripen into fruit. Monks, in the past, in this very auspicious kalpa, when the lifespan of beings reached twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Vidyacharana-sampanna, Sugata, Lokavidu, Anuttara-purusa-damya-sarathi, Shasta Deva-manushyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan named Light Treasury appeared in the world. He resided in the Deer Park at the hermitage of the Rishis in the city of Varanasi. Then, the attendant of the Blessed One, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Treasury, named Mya-ngan-med (无忧, Ashoka), in order to desire liberation, renounced the world under the Blessed One. But he only assumed that liberation was naturally available and did not exert himself. After some time, Mya-ngan-med vowed to spend the summer retreat in the borderlands. The Blessed One, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Treasury, also accomplished all the deeds of a Buddha, like a fire that has consumed its wood.

He resided at the end of the sleeping couch. The monk Ashoka also entered into meditation near the Sorrowless Tree. Then, the deity residing in that Sorrowless Tree, hearing that the Blessed One, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, would pass into complete nirvana, wept and remained there. The tears of his weeping fell upon the body of Ashoka. Then, Ashoka looked up and said to the weeping deity: "Deity, why do you weep?" The deity said: "Tonight, at midnight, the Blessed One, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, will pass into complete nirvana." Then, Ashoka, hearing the deity's words, cried out as if struck in a vital spot, and wept with a sound of compassion. Then, the deity asked: "Why do you weep?" Ashoka said: "Because I am separated from relatives and separated from my preceptor. The perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector is my uncle, and I have been declining in merit and have not made effort. Now he is going on a long journey, and I am left as an ordinary person. Because the path is long, I will not be able to attain distinction." The deity said: "If I were to bring you to the Blessed One, would you be able to attain distinction?" Ashoka said: "I think that as soon as I see the Blessed One, I will attain distinction." Then, by the power of his miraculous abilities, the deity took Ashoka to the Blessed One. Seeing the Blessed One, he was filled with joy. Having generated joy, the Blessed One Light-Protector taught him the Dharma by which, upon hearing it, he would manifestly attain the state of an Arhat. Having manifestly attained the state of an Arhat, first the venerable Ashoka passed into complete nirvana, and then the Blessed One, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, passed into complete nirvana. Then, the deity, seeing that the venerable Ashoka had passed into complete nirvana, generated joy and said: "All the distinctions that this venerable one has attained were taught by me, so in the future I too will be like this." The Blessed One, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, said to the Brahmin boy, the supreme one: "Brahmin boy, you are born
