The departed one, endowed with great merit, having obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, remedies for illness, and medicinal supplies, together with the community of Shravakas, resided in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, King Prasenajit of Kosala and King Ajatashatru were not on good terms with each other. Then, King Ajatashatru, having equipped an army with its four divisions—a host of elephants, a host of horses, a host of chariots, and a host of infantry—led it forth to wage war against King Prasenajit of Kosala. King Prasenajit of Kosala also heard that King Ajatashatru, having equipped an army with its four divisions—a host of elephants, a host of horses, a host of chariots, and a host of infantry—had led it forth to wage war against him. Having heard this, he too, having equipped an army with its four divisions—a host of elephants, a host of horses, a host of chariots, and a host of infantry—led it forth to wage war against King Ajatashatru. Then, King Ajatashatru seized all of King Prasenajit of Kosala's hosts of elephants, hosts of horses, hosts of chariots, and hosts of infantry. King Prasenajit of Kosala was defeated, terrified, and weakened. Utterly defeated and turning his back, he went to Shravasti in a single chariot. This happened three times. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala entered a chamber of sorrow, leaned on a staff with his hands, and sat there, his heart filled with despair. Then, in Shravasti, there was a wealthy merchant, rich, with great possessions and vast enjoyment, possessing extensive and broad holdings, endowed with the wealth of Vaishravana, rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. He heard how King Prasenajit of Kosala had been defeated, terrified, and weakened, utterly defeated and turning his back, and had gone to Shravasti in a single chariot. Having heard this, he went to where King Prasenajit of Kosala was, and upon arriving, said to King Prasenajit, "May you be victorious, Your Majesty."

Praising, he said, "May you live long!" (Then) he said, "God, why are you displeased? Lord of the gods, how much gold is needed to please the god? I am willing to offer that much gold to the god." So, he piled up a large amount of gold. There, even without sitting, one could not see the standing person, and even standing, one could not see the sitting person, he offered such gold. After that, King Prasenajit of Kosala sent a large number of spies to his country, telling them to listen to what people were saying. After a while, in the Jeta Grove, two old men were talking to each other, saying that there is a tactic called the lotus stamen, which is to put the cowardly people at the forefront of the war as cannon fodder, the mediocre people in the middle, and the very brave people in the back. After that, they reported this to the king. King Prasenajit of Kosala heard this, and in this way he organized the four divisions of the army, and marched to fight against King Ajatashatru. After that, King Prasenajit of Kosala, seized all the elephant troops of King Ajatashatru, the son of Lady Vaisali, the cavalry, chariot, and infantry were also seized. King Ajatashatru, the son of Lady Vaisali, was also defeated, fearful and depressed, completely defeated, turned his back to the enemy, and was captured alive. He was placed on a chariot and went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and then sat to one side. After sitting to one side, King Prasenajit of Kosala said to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, King Ajatashatru has long regarded me as an enemy, not as a friend; he treats me as an enemy, not as an ally. But because he is the son of my friend, I cannot kill him, I should release him." The Blessed One also said, "Great King, release him!" At that time, the Blessed One spoke in verse, saying, "Victory brings much hatred, defeat brings much suffering."

After that, if one abandons victory and defeat, one can live peacefully and happily in close tranquility. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala thought to himself: This regaining of the kingdom is due to the kindness of this merchant, and I should find an opportunity to give him whatever reward he desires. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala opened the opportunity to give the merchant whatever reward he desired. The merchant said: I want any reward I like, please grant me the kingdom for seven days to enjoy as I please. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala proclaimed throughout my entire country: My kingdom is given to the merchant for seven days. Soon, the merchant invited the Sangha of monks, led by the Buddha, and King Prasenajit and his retinue, to a grand banquet for seven days. He also sent messengers to all the people gathered in the countries of Kashi and Kosala, saying: For seven days, you can be free from all taxes, enjoy happiness as you please. Also, come here and take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Also, seek out my banquet and make offerings to the Tathagata. After that, he offered great reverence to the Bhagavan and his Shravaka Sangha for seven days. He also brought happiness to hundreds of thousands of people. After seven days, he bowed at the feet of the Bhagavan, filled with joy in his heart, and prayed: With this root of virtue, aspiration, and the practice of giving, may I become a Buddha who guides the blind world without a guide or complete guidance, liberating beings who are not liberated, freeing those who are not freed, giving breath to those who have not been given breath, and completely freeing those who have not completely escaped from suffering. Then, the Bhagavan, knowing the merchant's causes from one life to another and the karma from one action to another, smiled. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, when they smile, at that time, light emanates from their mouth.
