Some go downwards. Some go upwards. Those who go downwards are reborn in the hells of Reviving, Black Line, Crushing, Howling, Great Howling, Heat, Great Heat, Uninterrupted, Blistering, Bursting Blisters, Gnashing Teeth, Kyi-hud, Ah-chu, Splitting Like an Utpala Lotus, Splitting Like a Lotus, and Splitting Like a Great Lotus. In those hot hells, they are cooled and descend. In those cold hells, they are warmed and descend. Then, the differences in the suffering of those beings are calmed. Then, they think to themselves, "Alas! Have we died and transmigrated from here, or have we been born elsewhere?" Then, in order to generate faith, the Bhagavan manifests emanations. Seeing the emanations, they think to themselves, "Alas! We have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere, but through the power of this unprecedented appearance of beings, the differences in our suffering have been calmed." Then, they become delighted in their minds towards the emanations, and the karma that would cause them to experience hellish realms is exhausted. Among gods and humans, wherever they are fit to be vessels of the truths, they will take rebirth there. Those who go upwards are among the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Delighting in Emanation, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Retinues of Brahma, the Attendants of Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Minor Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Minor Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Abundant Virtue, the Cloudless, the Born of Merit, the Great Fruit, the Non-Great, the Non-Afflicted, the Magnificent Appearance, the Extremely Visible, and up to the gods of Akanishta, proclaiming the sounds of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. They also utter two verses:

Make an effort to renounce the world. Join the teachings of the Buddha. Like an elephant destroying a reed house, destroy the army of the Lord of Death. Whoever in this Dharma and discipline, acts with diligence, having completely abandoned the cycle of rebirth, will bring suffering to an end. Thus it is said. Then, those rays of light circled the three-thousandfold great thousand world system, following behind the Blessed One, and if the Blessed One wished to prophesy past actions, they would not appear on the hem of the Blessed One's robe. If he wished to prophesy future actions, they would not appear in front. If he wished to prophesy that beings would be born in hell, they would not appear on the soles of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as animals, they would not appear on the heels of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as hungry ghosts, they would not appear on his big toes. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as humans, they would not appear on his two knees. If he wished to prophesy that they would be a powerful wheel-turning monarch, they would not appear on the palm of his left hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would be a wheel-turning monarch, they would not appear on the palm of his right hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as gods, they would not appear on his navel. If he wished to prophesy the enlightenment of a Hearer, they would not appear on his face. If he wished to prophesy the enlightenment of a solitary Buddha, they would not appear on his brow. If he wished to prophesy the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, they would not appear on the crown of his head. Then, those rays of light circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and disappeared into the crown of the Blessed One's head. Then, the venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Various lights interwoven with a thousand colors, many have come forth from the door of your mouth, they illuminate all directions, just as the rising sun does." Again, he asked in verse: "The Buddha, free from agitation, not delighting in indulgence, having abandoned them, benefits beings.

Which is the cause of purity, The victorious conquerors do not show a smile Like the stalk of a lotus or the color of a conch shell, Without cause or condition. Since the steadfast knows the times with his own mind, O monks, kings, and those who seek to listen, dispel doubts, Arisen by the good ones, with the steadfast supreme speech Of the supreme among the conquerors. Lords, perfect Buddhas, steadfast like the ocean and the king of mountains, Do not show a smile now. For whose sake do the heroes show a smile? That is what the great majority of people seek to hear from you. The Blessed One said: Ananda, it is so, it is so. Ananda, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, does not smile without cause or condition. Ananda, do you see this great and noble Brahmin showing me such respect? Venerable one, I see it. Ananda, this great and noble Brahmin, through the roots of virtue, the generation of the mind, and the complete giving of the Dharma to be given, having perfectly accomplished the Bodhi to be perfectly accomplished by three countless eons, having completely perfected the six perfections completely pervaded by great compassion, having the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the three unmixed mindfulnesses, and being endowed with great compassion, will become a perfectly enlightened Buddha named Gampo Zang and will appear in the world. His Dharma to be given is that which has made my mind rejoice. When the Blessed One prophesied the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment to the great and noble Brahmin Gampo, Gampo invited the Blessed One together with the Sangha of Hearers to a feast of offerings for three months, and especially he also perfectly increased various kinds of roots of virtue. Monks, therefore, you should train like this: respect the teacher, honor him, revere him, and make offerings to him. Having respected the teacher, honored him, revered him, and made offerings, you should rely on him and abide, O monks, you should do so.
