Having manifested a four-fold army retinue through the power of magical abilities, the king of the northern Panchala, frightened and terrified, rode on a chariot and went to the Blessed One. The Blessed One taught him the Dharma that would cause animosity to cease. Having heard that Dharma, he went forth to the Blessed One, and through diligence, practice, and effort, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The king of the southern Panchala also invited the Blessed One, together with the Sangha of Hearers, for three months, offered food with a hundred flavors, and also offered garments worth a hundred thousand, and made the aspiration: 'Through this root of virtue, the generation of Bodhicitta, and the complete giving of the Dharma to be given, may I become a Buddha who guides the unguided, liberates those who are not liberated, releases those who are not released, gives breath to those who have not attained breath, and leads those who have not attained complete Nirvana to complete Nirvana.' Then, the Blessed One, knowing the cause and effect and the karmic lineage of that king of the southern Panchala, smiled. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, when they smile. At that time, blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light came forth from his mouth, some going downwards and some going upwards. Those that went downwards cooled the hot hells, such as the hell of revival, the hell of black lines, the hell of crushing, the hell of wailing, the hell of great wailing, the hell of heat, the hell of great heat, the hell of uninterrupted suffering, the hell of blisters, the hell of burst blisters, the hell of gnashing teeth, the hell of kyi hud, the hell of achu, the hell of cracking like an utpala flower, the hell of cracking like a lotus flower, and the hell of cracking like a great lotus flower. And in those cold hells, they became warm. Thus, the specific harms of those sentient beings were alleviated. Then, those beings thought to themselves: 'Alas, have we passed away from here?'
