Ah! For the sake of your compassion for us, please do not give away your head. Tens of thousands of ministers also threw themselves on the ground, pleading: For the sake of your compassion for us, please do not give away your head! Twenty thousand consorts also threw themselves on the ground and pleaded with the king, saying: Please have compassion on me and do not give away your head! The five hundred princes also wept and said: We have no protector or refuge, please have compassion and do not give away your head! Please also consider allowing us to follow in your footsteps. Then, that great king spoke to the ministers, consorts, and princes, saying: From beginningless time, this body has wandered in samsara, and for a long time has resided in the hells, dying countless times in a single day, this body has been wasted in vain. Ash water, iron beds, boiling hot springs, vomit, wheels of fire, pits of fire, and so on, suffering for a long time in the hells, being boiled and burned, and so on, this body has been wasted countless times, yet there is not even a little merit. If one is born in the realm of animals, they devour and harm each other, are killed by others and eaten by all, and after death they rot and stink, also countless times, and now this body is wasted, yet it has not become merit. If one is born in the realm of pretas, the body burns with flames, and immediately after being beheaded by a wheel, one revives again, experiencing this countless times. Thus, wasting the body has not become merit. If one is born as a human, even then, for the sake of wealth and women, one angrily glares with wide eyes, harming and killing each other, slaughtering each other on the battlefield, thus wasting the body, and countless bodies have been lost to desire, hatred, and ignorance, yet it has not become merit. I shall completely give away this body! My body is a collection of various impure things, and it will soon decay and separate, so why not give away this impermanent and filthy head if it can accomplish a beneficial purpose? My head...

gave it to that Brahmin, and with that merit, may I achieve unsurpassed Bodhi. When I manifest enlightenment, may my qualities be perfect, and through skillful means, may you also be freed from suffering. May this act of generosity lead me to manifest enlightenment. Do not create obstacles or hindrances to the mind of unsurpassed Bodhi. The petty kings, ministers, consorts, and princes, upon hearing those words, remained seated in silence. Then, that great king said to the Brahmin, "Now is the time to take my head, please proceed." The Brahmin replied, "Now, the king and ministers, along with many attendants, surround us. I alone do not have the power to sever the king's head; I cannot bear it. If you would grant me leave, let us go to the garden in the back." Then, the king instructed the petty kings and princes, "If you revere and serve me, do not utter harmful words to this Brahmin." After giving this instruction, he went with the Brahmin to the garden. Then, the Brahmin said to the king, "O King, you are young, and your height is equal to that of a giant. You cannot endure the heat, and you may regret it later. First, let us tie the king's head to the tree, and then I will slay you." Then, the king tied his head to a branch of a tree that was sturdy and covered with leaves, knelt on the ground, and said to the Brahmin, "Cut off my head, and then place it back in my hands, and take it from my hands. With the merit of giving you my head, it is not for the desire of Mara or Brahma, nor for the state of Indra or a universal monarch, nor for the enjoyment of the happiness of the three realms, but for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. It is for the sake of saving many beings and placing them in the bliss of Nirvana." At that moment, as the Brahmin raised his sword to strike, the tree god became very displeased, thinking, "Why is he committing the act of killing this person?" Then, he clapped his hands once near the Brahmin's ear, and the Brahmin lost his footing and fell to the ground. Then, the king looked up at the tree god and said, "In the past, I
