Having dreamed of a tree with various forms, before long, a great wind arose, and all the branches and leaves were blown away. Scattering like dust, even the place of great strength no longer existed. Having dreamed that all beings were extremely sad, upon awakening, I felt uneasy and frightened, and thought to myself: I dreamed of a great tree that would benefit all gods and humans, possessing all virtues. But before long, it was destroyed by a great wind. The Blessed One is like a great tree, becoming the refuge of all. Does the Blessed One not intend to pass into Nirvana? Thinking this, I was very frightened. Then I came to where the Blessed One was, prostrated at his feet with my head, and said to the Blessed One: While I was in the garden, I had such a dream. Does the Blessed One not intend to pass into Nirvana? The Blessed One said to Ananda: It is indeed so, just as you said. I will pass into Nirvana in three months. Whoever has attained the four miraculous feet can remain for one kalpa. I have also diligently cultivated the four miraculous feet. Should I not have been asked by you how long the life of the Thus-Gone One would last? Even though I asked you three times, you were unable to answer. After you left, the King of Demons, Mara, came and requested me to pass into Nirvana, and I agreed to it. Having heard these words, Ananda was extremely unhappy and tormented by sorrow, and his body became unbearable. The attendants confided in each other, and all were tormented by sorrow. Then they went to where the Blessed One was. There, the Blessed One said to Ananda and the attendants: Who is called permanent? Everything is impermanent. It is too soon. The entire world, including the gods, has become despondent and helpless, they said. They prayed to the Blessed One, saying: I cannot bear to see the Blessed One pass into nirvana, in any case, I will pass into nirvana first. They prayed in this way three times. The Blessed One replied: If you know that the time has come, all the noble ones will pass into nirvana in peace. He replied in this way. Shariputra also received permission from the Blessed One, and put on his robes. He circumambulated the Blessed One about a hundred times, and praised him with many verses. He grasped the Buddha's feet and hands, and touched his head to the ground three times. He joined his palms together and said: I, even for the last time, will see the Blessed One. He bid farewell with respect and reverence, and went with the attendant novice Kyunte to the place of his former birth in Rajagriha (Rajgir, located in present-day Bihar). Having arrived there, he instructed the novice Kyunte: You go to the cities, towns, the king's palace, the ministers' residences, and the residences of benefactors and friends, and tell them that I am bidding farewell. Then, the novice Kyunte went everywhere as instructed by his teacher, saying: My preceptor Shariputra has come here and will pass into nirvana, if you wish to see him, all of you should go. At that time, King Ajatashatru, wealthy and noble householders, and benefactors, having heard the novice's instruction, all became displeased and afflicted with sorrow. They all spoke in unison, saying: Venerable Shariputra, the great lord of the Dharma, who has become the spiritual friend of many beings, it is too early for him to pass into nirvana now. Having said this, they quickly arrived at the place where Shariputra was, and after paying homage, said: Venerable Shariputra, the great lord of the Dharma, the spiritual friend of many beings, you are giving up your life and passing into nirvana, in this way we and many beings will be without protection and support. Then, Shariputra said to the many attendants: All is impermanent.
