Some are coarse in conduct and commit offenses, and their discipline is also broken. Inside, they are full of desire, hatred, ignorance, stinginess, and jealousy. This is like an amra fruit that is not ripe on the outside and not ripe on the inside. Some monks are beautiful in conduct and also possess discipline, and inside they also possess the qualities of practice, discipline, samadhi, and wisdom. This is like an amra fruit that is ripe both inside and out. A mendicant monk who possesses both inner and outer qualities is like that. Because his merits and conduct are perfect, he is served and respected by all. At that time, in that country, there was a householder who was very devoted to the Three Jewels, and he had a young son. He thought to himself: 'I should ordain this son and seek a wise teacher.' Why? Because relying on a virtuous friend will increase virtue, and relying on an evil friend will cause sinful dharmas to arise. For example, although the nature of the wind is irreversible, if it comes from a sandalwood grove or a champaka grove, the wind will emit a fragrant scent. If it comes from the direction of a stinking and filthy dung heap, the wind will also stink. For example, if a new garment is placed in a container of incense, the garment will also emit a fragrance. If it is placed in a stinking dung heap, the garment will also stink. Relying on a virtuous friend will cause virtue to increase, and relying on an evil friend will cause sin to arise and increase. Therefore, I should offer this son of mine to this virtuous monk and have him ordained.' Thinking this, he went to where the monk was and said: 'I sincerely wish for my son to be ordained. Please, Venerable One, have compassion and allow him to be ordained. If you do not allow it, I will take him back home.' Then, the monk, observing with his divine eye, realized that if this child were ordained, he would purely protect the precepts and the Buddha's teachings would flourish, so he ordained him and made him a novice. At that time, the layperson who provided the necessities of life was friendly with the householders.
