Sixteenth, the chapter on novice monks keeping the precepts. Sixteenth, the chapter on novice monks keeping the precepts. Volume Five. Those who keep the precepts would rather lose their body and life than break the precepts at any time. Why is that? Precepts are the root of entering Bodhi, the supreme of non-outflow, and the path to happily go to Nirvana. The merit of keeping the precepts purely is immeasurable and incalculable. For example, the great sea is immeasurable and boundless. The merit of keeping the precepts is also immeasurable and boundless. For example, the sea is the abode of great sentient beings such as Asuras, turtles, crocodiles, and aquatic creatures. The precepts are also the same, and many great beings who abide in the three vehicles dwell in them. For example, in the great sea, there are many treasures such as gold, silver, and muni. The sea of precepts is also the same, with the basis of impermanence, the thirty-seven factors of Bodhi, meditation, samadhi, and many other treasures. For example, the bottom of the great sea is also diamond, and the end is also surrounded by diamond patterns. Even though four rivers flow in, it does not decrease or increase. The sea of precepts is also the same, with the Vinaya like a diamond as the bottom, the Abhidharma's appearance as the surrounding edge, and even though four Sutras flow in like rivers, there is neither increase nor decrease. Why does the sea not decrease? Because the fire of hell of sentient beings with unpardonable sins dries up the sea, therefore the water of the sea does not decrease. Rivers constantly flow in, so it does not increase. The sea of precepts is also the same, it does not arise because of carefulness, and it does not decrease because of possessing virtues. Therefore, it should be known that the merits of those who keep the precepts are extremely great. After the Bhagavan passed into Nirvana, in a country called Anda, there was a Bhikshu named Begging for Alms, who liked to live in the forest and was full of conduct. The Bhikshu Begging for Alms is praised by all the Buddhas and does not dwell among the ordinary. Why is that? Bhikshu Begging for Alms

is to have few desires and be content, not accumulating anything, being easily satisfied, having no concealment, and using the three robes, etc. He is a monk. He is the chief. A monk who dwells within the Sangha is one who has many desires, is not content, is stingy, and is attached to everything, and therefore will not gain great fame. That mendicant monk is endowed with virtuous conduct, and having attained the fruit of a monk, he abides in the six supernormal powers, the three knowledges, and the eight liberations, and his conduct is beautiful in every way, and therefore he becomes famous everywhere. At that time, in a place called Anta, there was a lay devotee who had great faith in the Three Jewels, who did not kill, did not steal, did not commit adultery, did not lie, and did not drink intoxicating liquor, keeping these five precepts, and who was endowed with virtues, living in that place. That lay devotee thought, "If I were to provide for the livelihood of that mendicant monk for the rest of his life, I would experience the merit. If I were to invite him to my home, he would suffer from the cold and heat on the way, and it would also become an obstacle to meditation, and later, when it ripens, I would also have to think about it and strive to achieve it. If I were to send the livelihood to his place of residence, then later, when it ripens, I would obtain it without having to strive for it." Thinking in this way, that lay devotee, with a mind of faith, prepared food with a hundred flavors, fragrances, and various colors, and sent it every day. It is difficult to judge the good and bad qualities of a monk in four ways, just as it is difficult to judge whether a mango is ripe or not. Some monks have very beautiful conduct and walk slowly, not looking beyond the yoke, but inwardly they are full of desire, hatred, and delusion, and they engage in unrighteous conduct and have lost their discipline, which is like a mango that is ripe on the outside but not ripe on the inside. Some monks have rough outward conduct and do not conform to the rules of conduct, but inwardly they have the conduct and virtues of a practitioner, and they are endowed with meditation, samadhi, and wisdom, which is like a mango that is ripe on the inside but not ripe on the outside. Monk
