So. The king of Kashi, Brahma-datta, heard that the king of Videha had mustered a fourfold army to wage war and was about to attack me. Having heard this, he also mustered a fourfold army to wage war and attacked the king of Videha. As a result, the king of Videha overcame and struck him, causing him to be defeated and turn his back. The king alone escaped and fled into a forest. He was weary in body and afflicted in mind, his body trembling. He dismounted from his horse, removed his armor and weapons, and sat on the ground. Not far from that place, a peacock was surrounded by a flock of peahens, playing and enjoying themselves, happy and delighted. When he saw this, he envied it, thinking, "This peacock enjoys desires and is not harmed by anything. This existence is truly good." When the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are not present, solitary Buddhas appear in the world. A solitary Buddha, not far from the king, was dwelling under a tree. In order to guide him, the solitary Buddha made a sound of clearing his throat. As soon as he heard this, the king was frightened and terrified, and stood up, thinking, "Has the enemy's army come?" Then the king saw a solitary Buddha dwelling under a tree. Having seen him, he was delighted in his heart, thinking, "Since this one is happy in this uninhabited forest, he must surely be a great being." According to the custom of the kings of ancient royal families, whenever they went to war or hunting, they would tie a small amount of food to the horse's rump. The king also had a small amount of food tied to his horse's rump, and he offered this food to the solitary Buddha. The solitary Buddha carried the king into the sky and placed him in a place free from fear. Then the king made a prayer: "By this root of virtue, may I be born as a peacock wherever I am born! May I be even more

In particular, may the holy teacher be pleased, and may he not be displeased. May such qualities as these also be attained. May one be ordained in that very doctrine, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat. Monks, what do you think? The king who was given by Brahma at that time was none other than that bird. Because he offered food to the solitary Buddha there and made the aspiration, now this bird has pleased me and has not displeased me. // The second bird: While residing in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti, at that time, when the fragrant mountain was spreading its fragrance, there was a bird named Kumuda, which held various festivals, but would soon become ill and die. The Blessed One, the Buddha, is the teacher who guides the solitary path of liberation, possesses mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, is skilled in the three unmixed close mindfulnesses, is fearless with the four fearlessnesses, is liberated from the cycle of the five realms, is skilled in the six sense bases, and whose field of activity is the seven branches of enlightenment. He is a meditator on the eight liberations, one who enters into the nine successive meditative absorptions, possesses the ten powers, and proclaims the great, true lion's roar. According to the Dharma, three times during the day and three times during the night, for six times day and night, the Buddha observes the world with the eye of the Buddha: Who is declining? Who is prospering? Who is impoverished? Who is miserable? Who is encountering harm? Who is impoverished, miserable, and encountering harm? Who is inclined towards the lower realms? Who is falling into the lower realms? Who has fallen into the lower realms? Who is it that I will rescue from the lower realms and place in the heavens, liberation, and fruition? Who is sinking in the mire of misconduct, and I will establish them in the right path? Who is without the seven noble riches, and I will empower them with the dominion of the seven noble riches? Who has not generated roots of virtue, and I will cause them to generate them? Who has already generated roots of virtue, and I will cause them to fully ripen? Who has already fully ripened roots of virtue, and I will pierce them with the sword of wisdom? Who is the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha?
