Saga, due to the maturation of that karma, he was born into a wealthy and affluent family with great possessions. As soon as he was born, his entire body emitted the smell of feces, he sought feces, and he lived in a swamp of feces. What karma did he commit, that due to the maturation of that karma, this person pleased the Blessed One and did not displease the Blessed One, and having become a monk in the Blessed One's teachings, abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat? The Blessed One said: Monks, this person has done and accumulated such karma. Monks, in the distant past, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Fully Enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Tamer of Men, Supreme, Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One named Light-Protecting appeared in the world. At that time, in the city of Varanasi, there lived a wealthy and affluent householder with great possessions, whose holdings were vast and extensive, possessing wealth comparable to that of Vaishravana, even rivaling Vaishravana's wealth. Later, he became fond of the Buddha, fond of the Dharma, and fond of the Sangha, taking refuge and upholding the precepts, directly realizing the fruit of Non-Return. Then he thought: I have neither son nor daughter, and after I die and pass away, everything I own will be taken by the king. Instead, I will make offerings to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. So he built a monastery complete in every aspect, provided all the necessary items, and served the monks with all the provisions, and appointed a monk there as a caretaker. Then, one day, that caretaker had some business to attend to in another region, so he deceived the householder and left. After he left, an Arhat, wandering on pilgrimage, arrived at that monastery. The householder saw that Arhat was handsome and had handsome attendants, and as soon as he saw him, the householder became very fond of him, and after becoming fond of him, he thought: If I could...

If only one is invited, it will not be granted. Thinking, 'For that very reason, I will invite the Sangha of monks to my house for a meal,' he prostrated at his feet and said, 'Venerable one, would you and the Sangha of monks be pleased to accept a meal at my house tomorrow?' Then, that Arhat thought, 'If I do not agree, it will be an obstacle to the gains of these monks, and it will also be an obstacle to the merit of this patron.' Therefore, he did not say anything to him and agreed. Then, the householder, the next day, for the sake of the Sangha of monks, prepared a proper bath, bedding, and cushions in his house. After preparing water, he sent someone to invite the monks, urging, 'Venerable ones, when the parasol and the proper bath are ready, please know that the time has come.' Then, the monks arrived at his house, and the householder summoned a barber, had all the monks shave their heads, and had them bathe properly. Then, with his own hands, he satisfied them with many clean and excellent foods and drinks. That monk in charge of the monastery also returned to that monastery after completing his business in the region. When he returned, he asked, 'Where have those monks gone, as they are not to be seen?' They replied, 'The householder has invited them to his house.' He said, 'For whom did he invite them?' They replied, 'He invited them for a newly arrived monk.' Then, as soon as he heard this, he became very displeased, thinking, 'I am the one who does all the work. For a newly arrived monk, he has invited the Sangha of monks.' He became angry and went to the householder's house. When he went there and looked, he saw the householder himself respectfully attending to that Arhat. Then, he became even more angry out of jealousy. There, after the monks had received the meal and were returning to the monastery, he went to that Arhat and said, 'Venerable one, do you know who this householder is doing this for?' The Arhat said, 'I...'

knew, and would not return. The attendant said: If that is so, it is easier for you to shave your own hair than to have taken the shaving from him. It is easier for you to sink into the mire of excrement than to have taken the bathing utensils from him. It is easier for you to eat and drink excrement and urine than to have taken food and drink from him. Then, the arhat thought, this affliction has become base and decayed, and it would not be right for it to decay completely, so it is necessary to stop it, and said to him: Venerable one, do you know who I am and who you are? He said: I know, you are also a renunciate and I am also a renunciate. The arhat said: O children, although the renunciation is similar, you are an ordinary person bound by all bonds, but I am an arhat, liberated from all bonds. You have spoken harsh words, please confess your faults. You will wander in samsara and find great suffering. Then, as soon as he heard those words, that monk felt great remorse. Having felt remorse, he prostrated at the feet of the arhat and asked for forgiveness. Then, having practiced celibacy for one lifetime, he made a prayer at the time of death: Alas, may the karma of speaking harsh words to that arhat in this way not come upon me. Later, by this root of virtue of having served the Sangha according to the Dharma and having practiced celibacy for one lifetime, may I be born in a family that is rich, wealthy, and enjoys great abundance wherever I am born. May I please the Buddha, the Blessed One, who is the prediction of the Brahmin boy Lama by the Perfectly Complete Buddha Light Protector. May I not displease him. May I only renounce in that teaching, abandon all afflictions, and realize the state of arhat. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the monk who became the attendant was this very Va, and there he was to the arhat.
