Even if one is accustomed to the mind of wheat, such ease will not arise. Having seen this, out of respect for the Buddha, he got down from the palanquin and crawled on all fours to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood his thoughts, habits, faculties, knowledge, and nature, and taught him the Dharma accordingly. Then, while sitting on that very seat, that crawler destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom and manifested the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he thought: 'If my body had not become like this, I would also go forth in the well-spoken Dharma and discipline, and I would strive, practice, and exert myself to cross the rivers and transcend the unions.' As soon as he generated this thought, the limbs of his body became complete. Then, he became even more delighted with the Blessed One. Having become delighted, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and bowed with his palms joined in the direction of the Blessed One. He said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable one, if I am able to go forth in the well-spoken Dharma and discipline, receive full ordination, and obtain the state of a bhikshu, then I would also practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One.' Then, the Blessed One ordained him with the words 'Come, bhikshu' and granted him full ordination. He also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and manifested the state of an arhat. That arhat, having become free from desire for the three realms, possessed a mind that regarded gold and wood equally, a mind that regarded the sky and the palm of his hand as the same, having become cool like sandalwood soaked in water, having destroyed the shell of ignorance with wisdom, having obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual self-awareness, not looking to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, being worshiped by the gods, including the powerful ones and their attendants.

It became a place worthy of respect and reverence. Then, the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable Āpye, what deeds did he do that, due to the maturation of that deed, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous lineage? What deeds did he do that, due to the maturation of that deed, he became Āpye? This person has pleased the Blessed One, and has not displeased the Blessed One. As soon as he generated the mind of renunciation, his inauspiciousness disappeared and became auspicious. Having renounced in the teachings of the Blessed One, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat." The Blessed One said: "Monks, this person has done and accumulated deeds. Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate eon, when beings lived for twenty thousand years, the fully enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, the Unsurpassed, Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Treasury appeared in the world. At that time, in Varanasi, there was a layperson who was very learned, a speaker of Dharma with confidence in knowledge and liberation, who was respected, revered, honored, and worshipped by all laypeople. Then, when the fully enlightened Buddha Light Treasury resided in Varanasi, the laypeople went to the fully enlightened Buddha Light Treasury to listen to the Dharma. Later, when the fully enlightened Buddha Light Treasury departed from that place, those laypeople listened to the Dharma from that layperson. Those laypeople also offered five hundred kāṣāpaṇas to that layperson as offerings. That layperson also offered those five hundred kāṣāpaṇas to the Sangha. Then, one day, that layperson went to the temple together with those groups of laypeople. At that time, the Sangha of monks was performing a Vinaya act, and the temple manager drove all the laypeople outside the temple.

He said, 'Do not listen to this.' Then, those groups of lay practitioners said to that lay practitioner, 'Since we can be expelled by the monks, why would someone like you, who is learned, possesses wisdom and confidence in liberation, and preaches the Dharma, be expelled?' Saying this, their perception of him as wise disappeared. Then, that lay practitioner became angry because of this matter. He said to the monks, 'I have done so many beneficial things for you who sit on a hundred thousand piles of dung, yet you not only speak ill of me alone, but also degrade me in public.' Then, the monks thought, 'This affliction has become base and degenerate.' So they said to the lay practitioner, 'Lay practitioner, you have spoken harsh words. Confess your offense. May you experience the unpleasant result of that action.' Then, that lay practitioner also felt great remorse, thinking, 'I have spoken harsh words to such worthy recipients, I have done wrong.' So he confessed his offense, gave various gifts, performed various virtuous deeds, took refuge for life, kept the precepts, and at the time of death made the aspiration: 'Alas, may this action of speaking harsh words to such pure beings not befall me. Even if the result of this action inevitably ripens upon me, may my inauspiciousness disappear and become auspicious as soon as I generate the mind of renunciation. By the virtue of respecting the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, giving various gifts, performing various virtuous deeds, taking refuge for life, and keeping the precepts, may I be born wherever I am born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May my name in the world become the auspiciousness of all the world. May all that I think and desire be accomplished.' Monks, what do you think? The one who became a lay practitioner at that time...
