Eighty thousand upholders of the law, demons, descended from there to this Jambudvipa. Seeing how the ascetic Gautama had cut off the continuity of his expansive body, they all appeared in the land of Magadha. They thought: "Have we lost our power of illusion because of fear? Now he and his retinue are gathered there. Will he not commit evil for our sake?" We should go there first and listen to what causes him to be like this. Then, the demon named Upholder of the Law, along with his retinue, descended from there and went to where the Blessed One was. He went and sat before the Blessed One. At that time, he boldly spoke these verses: "You have a great disease, you have not crossed the ocean of old age and death. If you deceive sentient beings in this way, how can you enter into liberation?" Then the Blessed One replied to the demon named Upholder of the Law with verses: "I have crossed the river of sentient beings, I have no desire. Out of compassion for sentient beings, I teach the Dharma to living beings. You have long labored in samsara, striving for enlightenment. From Dipamkara Buddha onwards, you have always practiced generosity and discipline. You have depicted billions of Buddhas. For the sake of the supreme vehicle, I will prophesy for you. Practice all the qualities of training, meditate without signs. I give you pure eyes, remember your past lives." Then, driven by the past lives of the demon named Upholder of the Law, his prayers, his offerings to the Buddhas, and all his roots of virtue, he came before the Blessed One like scattered grass. With tears on his face, he joined his palms and said: "Venerable Blessed One, like a child, like a drunkard, like one whose mind is disturbed, I confess my faults. Venerable Blessed One, I confess my faults. I remember that I have completed one immeasurable number with great effort for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment."

La to. The practice of the six perfections has been carried out. Roots of virtue have been extensively cultivated. To the countless hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddhas, the Bhagavat Tathagatas, both past and present, I have offered service and various kinds of veneration, and I have also heard the Dharma. I have also made aspirations. In the teachings of the Tathagata Kashyapa, I encouraged some monks to follow the words of the Shravakas. Then, without thinking, I said, "Alas, in the form of a monk, to preach the words of the Shravakas in front of those who have entered the Mahayana, this is truly a demon!" I spoke such sinful words. If I had not spoken those sinful words at that time, I should have received the prediction of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment there. Due to the residue of past karma, after dying from there, I was born in the realm of demons. There, for fifty-seven kotis of years and one hundred thousand years, I did not even generate a single thought of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, let alone the abode of Brahma. Thus, I twice asked for forgiveness from the Tathagata and his retinue. As long as I wander in the cycle of past lives, I would rather remain in hell at the end of future lives than turn away from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Bhagavan said: "Well done! Well done! Son of noble family! If someone inclines their mind towards enlightenment with a compassionate heart, this is the best offering and dedication to the guides. Even if someone lights a lamp as large as Mount Sumeru in front of the guides, the accumulation of merit would not be as great as yours. Take on my firm sinful deeds! For these aggregates and elements, abandon elaboration, do not cling to characteristics, and remember all conditioned phenomena. You will be transformed into the most excellent qualities." Then, at that very moment, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, whose basis is moral discipline, obtained forbearance towards the Dharma that accords with it.

To. Then, at that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Tsiltrim Ten (Śīla-sthita, Abiding in Morality) rose from his seat and offered the Bhagavan a garland of priceless pearls, requesting: "How can we quickly realize all dharmas, completely destroy all views like bubbles, and attain the supreme patience on the path to enlightenment, and what is the dharma that will liberate all sentient beings in the near future? What does a Bodhisattva meditate on in order to abandon?" The Bhagavan replied: "Tsiltrim Ten, a wise person should quickly generate four dharmas. What are the four? They are: for the sake of sentient beings, one should be willing to endure all immeasurable sufferings; one should take up the immeasurable disciplines of the Buddha-fields; one should take them up without any omission; and one should quickly perfect all immeasurable Buddha-dharmas." Moreover, at that time, the retinue of Tsiltrim Ten, the eighty-four thousand demons, having heard the prophecy, developed great faith and joy in the Tathagata, and having developed reverence, they begged the Bhagavan for forgiveness with great devotion. At that time, they also made aspirations to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and they all obtained the samadhi of not forgetting the mind of enlightenment. They offered their respective divine garments to the Bhagavan and sat down on one side. The evil demon saw this, and seeing it, became even more agitated and frightened, and said: "The ascetic has been lured into the trap, and has been separated from those retinues. Where shall we go from here? Everything has fallen under his control. Let no one else come out! We should abide in the realm of the demon." Having said this, they quickly closed the gates of the city and hid themselves. Then, the Bhagavan, as he had spoken from the eye of the sky, again began to extensively and truly teach them the three Brahma-viharas, namely, the object of sentient beings, the object of dharma, and the object of no object. On the summit of Mount Rakalati, in the abode of the righteous sage Thupa.
