Through the blessing, within that assembly, a great ascetic named Fire Torch spoke to the Bodhisattva Victorious One's Body, saying: "Hey, young one, be quiet for a moment, I will ask a question. If you can comprehend my question, then it will also be in accordance with the name 'All-Knowing One.' However, if you allow the sons of the non-greedy and the wanderers born of the Great Powerful One to manifest their powers, it is not so amazing here, for evil men and illusionists can also accomplish this." Then, the Bhagavan, with a smiling face, looked all around at the assembly of ascetics and spoke to the great ascetic Fire Torch, saying: "O long-lived one, great ascetic, ask whatever question you can, and I will answer it separately." Then, the great ascetic Fire Torch said to the Bhagavan: "Hey, Gautama, from where do sentient beings originate? For what reason will they be burned by the eon? Where will sentient beings gather? Are there tiny sentient beings inside, about a cubit long? Or a span long? Or a finger long? Or a thumb long? As big as barley, wheat, small lentil pods, small lentil grains, sesame, or mustard seeds? How many sentient beings are inside, please tell us." Then, the Bhagavan said to the great ascetic Fire Torch: "Great ascetic, well done, well done!" and gave his blessing. "Great ascetic, this question you ask about the sixty eons is fitting." Then, all the great ascetics were amazed, thinking: "We who live together do not know the lifespan of the great ascetic Fire Torch, how could he know it?" The Bhagavan said: "Great ascetic, therefore listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. Great ascetic, when you asked me from where sentient beings originate, that is not expressible in words. What is called a sentient being arises from the cause of ignorance and goes through birth, old age, and death. Great ascetic, sentient beings also arise from causes and conditions, and the causes and conditions are the parents. Great ascetic, the union of parents is that cause."

The karmic winds arising from lifelong contemplation, entering the city of women, that is the condition. Great ascetic, the noble truth of suffering, the arising of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering, that is sentient being. The five aggregates of grasping and the eighteen elements are sentient beings. Great ascetic, sentient beings are other, and karma is not other. Karma is other, and sentient beings are not other. Great ascetic, sentient beings do not decrease, nor do they increase. The great ascetic asked: O Gautama, if sentient beings neither decrease nor increase, then why do sentient beings die from the birth of a dog and become powerful? The Blessed One replied: Great ascetic, it is not as you say. If the powerful were already powerful, then they should not die without power. Great ascetic, how can one who is not the master of his own body become powerful? Great ascetic, it is like a firefly thinking, 'I will illuminate Jambudvipa.' Because of this thought, does the firefly illuminate Jambudvipa? The powerful with an untamed mind are not truly powerful. Great ascetic, if the powerful were to diminish afflictions, then dogs would have more afflictions. When the powerful and afflictions are present in both dogs and the powerful, then one does not see the decrease of sentient beings, nor does one see the increase of sentient beings. The great ascetic asked: Did Gautama diminish afflictions? The Blessed One replied: Great ascetic, I have neither reversed nor diminished perversions. The great ascetic asked: If that is so, then you are not powerful either. The Blessed One replied: Great ascetic, that is so, because it has not happened, I am not powerful either. The great ascetic asked: Gautama, let us put aside these words for now. Gautama's son said that sentient beings are born from the union of parents, then sentient beings copulating in large numbers...

What is it like that sentient beings are born so few? The Blessed One said: I will show you an example. Great hermit, it is like this: from one seed a tree grows, and from one fruit, countless fruits grow. Sometimes one is suitable to be a seed, but the rest are not suitable to be seeds, what is that like? The great hermit said: O Gautama, the wind and the sun have made the fruits bad. The Blessed One said: Great hermit, it is just so, the wind of karma has also made the fruits of sentient beings bad. Great hermit, some are eaten by worms while they are still in the womb. Some are blown into powder by the winds of karma. Great hermit, the faults of trees are few, the faults of sentient beings are many. Great hermit, the realm of sentient beings is caused by complete conceptualization. Great hermit, as many as the minds and mental events of sentient beings arise, that many are focused on existence. Great hermit, therefore I say that the realm of sentient beings is caused by complete conceptualization. The great hermit said: O Gautama, it is just so, this statement is completely pure. Please tell me, why will it be burned by the fire of the eon? The Blessed One said: Great hermit, because the realm of dharma is not compounded, it will be burned by the fire of the eon. Great hermit, if it will not be burned by the fire of the eon, the realm of dharma will become two, some are impermanent, and some are permanent. At that time, the Thus-Gone One will not be a speaker of truth. Great hermit, because all of this is not permanent, not stable, not expired, at that time the Thus-Gone One will obtain the name of the All-Knowing One. The great hermit said to the Brahmin boy: It is fitting to name him the All-Knowing One. The Blessed One said: Great hermit, if it were not burned by the fire of the eon, there would be no different times such as this is a good time, this is a bad time. Great hermit
