Thirst is thirst. The complexion changes. The limbs tremble. Unable to work. No strength. The body is covered with saliva, mucus, urine, and vomit. The senses of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind are blocked. Hiccups occur. Loud noises emerge. Doctors give up. All medicines, foods, edibles, and soups are vomited out. To go to other places, one lies on the final bed. One sinks into the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, which has no beginning. Life is only a little, but one is terrified by the messengers of Yama. One falls into the power of demons. Breathing stops. The mouth and nose are upturned. The teeth clench. One begs, saying, "Give alms, give alms." From the existence of karma, one enters another existence. Alone, without a companion. One abandons this world. One goes to another world. A great corpse is lifted. One enters great darkness. One falls into a great precipice. One enters a dense forest. One goes to a great solitary place. One is carried away by a great ocean. One is driven by the wind of karma. One goes to a place without foundation. One enters a great battlefield. One is seized by a great demon. One clings to the sky. Parents, siblings, sons, and daughters surround one. Breathing stops. They say, "Let us divide the wealth." They say, "Alas, mother! Alas, father! Alas, child!" The hair is disheveled. When only generosity, asceticism, and Dharma become friends, there is no other refuge, no other protector, no other place, no other support than the Dharma. O great king, at that time, at that moment, the Dharma will be an island, a place, a protector, and a reliance. O great king, just as fire is needed when one is threatened by cold, extinguishing fire is needed when one is severely burned by fire, coolness is needed when one is threatened by heat, shade and cool wind are needed when a traveler is tired, cool water is needed when one is thirsty, a vehicle is needed when one is on a journey, a soft bed is needed when one is sleeping, cold water is needed when one is thirsty, good food is needed when one is extremely hungry, relief is needed when one is oppressed by sorrow, calmness is needed when one is tormented, and someone to show the way is needed when one is lost in the wilderness.
