The trees will gather together. What are the two? They are of this life and the next. Great king, the king is like parents. Male servants, female servants, employees, those who live on wages, friends, ministers, relatives, city dwellers are like the king's sons and daughters. Great king, for example, a man or woman dreams while sleeping, seeing delightful gardens, delightful mountains, delightful forests, delightful rivers, delightful ponds, delightful villages, delightful palaces, but upon waking, sees nothing. Great king, similarly, the throne, life, the happiness of the throne, the happiness of the king's power, the happiness of desire, the happiness of the enjoyment of desire, all these are like dreams. For example, elephants, horses, vehicles, armies, women, houses, virtuous wives, youths, ministers, accountants, great ministers, gatekeepers, attendants, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, wives, sons, daughters, age, male servants, female servants, employees, those who live on wages, friends, relatives, city dwellers, conches, gold, jewels, treasures, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, coral, carnelian, silver, clothes, ornaments, wealth, grain, granaries, storehouses, and so on, all these must be abandoned and left behind. All these are impermanent, unstable, unreliable, of a changing nature, short-lived, not abiding, moving, shaking, decaying, momentary, ultimately sinful, the gate of exhaustion and decline, ultimately of a decaying nature, ultimately separating, accompanied by fear, accompanied by harm, full of sorrow and conflict, rotting, decaying, breaking, separating, destroying, of a completely decaying nature. Great king, therefore, one should see them as impermanent and regard them as the gate of exhaustion and decline, and one should be frightened by death. Great king

O great king, rule the kingdom only with Dharma! Do not rule with what is not Dharma. May you be in harmony with the Dharma! Do not be in harmony with what is not Dharma. Why is that? O great king, it is like this: for example, from trees, flowers arise, and then fruits arise. Having become fruits, those fruits also wither away. What was once green leaves turns yellow. Having turned yellow, they also completely disappear. O great king, it is like this: for example, a great pile of fire burning, intensely burning, completely spreading and burning, becoming one flame, however long it burns, it will eventually be extinguished. The sun and the moon, so great in miraculous power, so great in strength, so renowned for their great authority, adorned with their own splendor, even these two, having illuminated this world, will disappear. Sons of gods gathering clouds, or those who cause rain, thunder, make sounds, cover the sky, and send down a stream of rain, eventually the raindrops will become invisible. O great king, similarly, the happiness of kingship, the happiness of royal power, the happiness of desire, and the happiness of enjoying desires, are all like a dream. It is like this: elephants, cavalry, chariots, small armies, women, houses, virtuous wives, youths, ministers, accountants, great ministers, gatekeepers, attendants, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, wives, sons, daughters, age, male servants, female servants, laborers, those who live on leftovers, friends, ministers, relatives, city dwellers, conches, gold, jewels, precious stones, pearls, vaiḍūrya (वैडूर्य, Vaidurya, lapis lazuli), shells, agate, coral, sāle-sbram (साले-सृम, Sale-srma, a kind of spice), silver, silk, ornaments, wealth, grains, treasuries, granaries, and so on, all of these must be abandoned and left behind. All of these are impermanent, unstable, unreliable, of a changing nature, short-lived, not lasting, wavering, moving, ultimately decaying, momentary, ultimately sinful, and exhaustible.

The gate of decay and aging, the nature of things that will eventually disperse, accompanied by destruction, accompanied by harm, accompanied by sorrow, full of strife, rotting, festering, breaking, separating, dispersing, is the nature of destruction. Great King, you should observe impermanence and exhaustion, observe the gate of aging, and be frightened by death. Practice the kingdom of Dharma! Do not practice non-Dharma. You should be in harmony with the Dharma, do not be in harmony with non-Dharma. Why is that? Great King, for example, great mountains coming from the four directions, hard, stable, possessing essence, not collapsing, not cracking, without gaps, extremely hard, completely dense, four peaks touching the sky and reversing the earth, grinding all the grass, trees, gums, branches, and leaves, and all sentient beings and living beings into powder, for those, whether escaping quickly, or resisting with strength, or resisting with wealth, or resisting with mantras and medicines, it is not an easy thing to do. Great King, in the same way, these four great fears will come, for those, whether escaping quickly, or resisting with strength, or resisting with wealth, or resisting with medicines and mantras, it is not an easy thing to do. What are the four? Aging, sickness, death, and decay. Great King, aging destroys youth, sickness destroys health, decay destroys all perfections, death destroys life, for those, whether escaping quickly, or resisting with strength, or resisting with wealth, or pacifying with medicines and mantras, it is not an easy thing to do. Great King, for example, like the king of mountains, the lion, enters the herd of deer, catches the deer, and acts as he pleases. That deer, being caught by the powerful and fearsome mouth, becomes powerless. Great King, in the same way, pierced by the arrow of the Lord of Death, one will lose fatness, have no protector, no refuge, no relatives, nature is destroyed, joints are separated, flesh and blood are dried up, and the body is tormented by disease.
