The ministers who received the teachings, the attendants, and hundreds and thousands of people with their palms joined together bowed and said, 'May you reign!' 'May you reign!' They uttered pleasant sounds. Before long, he would die motionless in his bed, and four people would lift him up. Father, mother, brothers, sisters, wife, sons, daughters, male servants, female servants, workers, those who live on wages, cooks, ministers, and city dwellers would all be overcome with grief. They would raise their hands and beat their chests, crying out with great sorrow, 'Alas! My protector! Alas! My hero! Alas! My lord!' The attendants and city dwellers would see it with fear. They would carry him out of the south gate of the city and bury him underground, or bury him in a deserted monastery. Crows, vultures, and foxes would devour his body, and the bones would be burned by fire, or thrown into water, or buried underground, but eventually they would be reduced to powder by wind, sun, and rain, scattered in all directions, and eventually rot. Great king, in this way, the bodies of all sentient beings will change. Great king, all conditioned phenomena are thus impermanent, thus unstable, thus unreliable, thus subject to change. They are short-lived, impermanent, moving, shifting, momentary, and ultimately lead to decay and exhaustion, ultimately to disintegration, full of fear, full of harm, full of sorrow and confusion, decaying, decomposing, breaking, separating, scattering, and having the nature of complete destruction. Great king, therefore, one should view them as impermanent, and view them as decay and exhaustion. Do not be attached to desire, do not be hateful with anger, do not be deluded by ignorance, do not be attached to the happiness of royal power, do not be attached to the happiness of desire and the enjoyment of desire. One should view them as impermanent, be vigilant, unattached, not greedy, not clinging, not infatuated, and without pride in life, one should be afraid of death. Rule the kingdom only with Dharma, and not with what is not Dharma.

Do not do this. You should act in accordance with the Dharma. Do not act in accordance with what is not Dharma. Why is that? Great King, I do not say that one is satisfied with the attainment of desires, and the extreme attainment, and so on, completely and so on, relying on these desires. Those who are satisfied by noble wisdom, they are satisfied. Great King, it is like this: conditioned by ignorance, actions arise; conditioned by actions, consciousness arises; conditioned by consciousness, name and form arise; conditioned by name and form, the six sense sources arise; conditioned by the six sense sources, contact arises; conditioned by contact, feeling arises; conditioned by feeling, craving arises; conditioned by craving, grasping arises; conditioned by grasping, becoming arises; conditioned by becoming, birth arises; conditioned by birth, aging and death arise, as well as sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and disturbance. Thus, this great mass of suffering also arises. Therefore, with the cessation of ignorance, actions cease; with the cessation of actions, consciousness ceases; with the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease; with the cessation of name and form, the six sense sources cease; with the cessation of the six sense sources, contact ceases; with the cessation of contact, feeling ceases; with the cessation of feeling, craving ceases; with the cessation of craving, grasping ceases; with the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases; with the cessation of becoming, birth ceases; with the cessation of birth, aging and death cease, as well as sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and disturbance. Thus, this great mass of suffering also ceases. Great King, therefore, do not be attached by desire, do not be hated by hatred, do not be deluded by ignorance, do not be swayed by the power of the kingdom and the arrogance of power, but govern the kingdom solely by the Dharma! Do not govern by what is not Dharma. You should act in accordance with the Dharma. Do not act in accordance with what is not Dharma. Why is that? Great King, regarding the attainment of various desires, and the extreme attainment, I say until one is not satisfied, I say that one will not be completely satisfied. I say that those

Those who are satisfied with noble wisdom are satisfied. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: This person will surely depart, the Lord of Death will come terribly. Your life is unstable, O King, do not be heedless! One should give up wealth to protect the body, one should give up limbs to protect life. Wealth and limbs, and likewise life, all can be given up, here one should protect the Dharma. Practicing the Dharma, the Dharma protects one, just as a large umbrella protects in summer. The benefit of practicing the Dharma is that one who practices the Dharma will not go to evil destinies. One who practices non-Dharma and is heedless, after dying from here will go to terrible evil destinies. Wherever one stays, where death cannot reach, that place does not exist. Not in the sky, not in the ocean, even entering a mountain cave is of no help. The great fear of death is the destruction of the aggregates and the end of life, know this. You should aspire to attain immortality, once Nirvana is attained, one will not die again. After the Blessed One spoke thus, King Prasenajit of Kosala, and eighty-four thousand beings, and gods, humans, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and the world with them rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The Noble Advice to the King, Mahayana Sutra, is complete.
