Just as putting something unclean into a dye suitable for changing color can make the dye exquisite, so too, the householder Vimalagarbha, while sitting on that seat, developed the Dharma-eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding the dharmas. Thereafter, the householder Vimalagarbha saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, generated the dharmas, realized perfect enlightenment, was without hesitation, free from doubt, without skepticism, and did not rely on others. Having fully understood the Teacher's doctrine and attained fearlessness, he addressed the Blessed One as follows: "Venerable Blessed One, I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. Venerable Blessed One, please accept me as a lay follower. From this day forth, for as long as I live, you are my refuge, I take refuge in you." Then, those monks were amazed and found it wondrous, thinking: "In this way, the householder Vimalagarbha wanted to burn the Blessed One in a fire pit and cause him to fall into the great Avici hell, but the Blessed One rescued him from the great Avici hell and caused him to develop the Dharma-eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding the dharmas. This is truly rare and wondrous!" The Blessed One said: "Monks, the householder Vimalagarbha now only wants to burn me in a fire pit and cause him to fall into the great Avici hell, but I rescued him from that great Avici hell and caused him to develop the Dharma-eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding the dharmas. Moreover, monks, at other times, the householder Vimalagarbha also wants to burn me in a fire pit and cause him to fall into the great Avici hell, and I will rescue him from that great Avici hell." Those monks said: "Venerable Blessed One, at other times, the householder Vimalagarbha burned the Blessed One in a fire pit, causing him to fall into the uninterrupted great Avici hell. How did the Blessed One liberate him from that great Avici hell?" The Blessed One said: "Monks, in the past, there was a brahmin boy named Dharma-desiring, who was endowed with morality, endowed with qualities, of few desires, content, extremely solitary, and possessed of virtuous qualities.

It happened that the Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker was of good form, beautiful, pleasing to behold, endowed with excellent and supreme radiance. The Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker was honored by Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and householders. Having been made a guru and worshipped, he obtained clothes, food, bedding, medicine for the sick, and many fine utensils. The Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker was seeking a single verse consisting of a hundred thousand stanzas. Then, a certain Brahmin, unable to bear the gains, respect, and stanzas of the Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker, went to where the Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker was, and having arrived, he spoke thus to the Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker: "O Brahmin boy, I shall proclaim a well-spoken teaching to you." The Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker said: "O Noble One, please proclaim a well-spoken teaching to me." The Brahmin said: "O Dharma-seeker, I am not allowed to proclaim such a well-spoken teaching to you." The Dharma-seeker said: "O Noble One, then how will you proclaim the well-spoken teaching to me?" The Brahmin said: "If, O Dharma-seeker, you have a large pit dug, and after it is dug, have it filled with fire, and after it is filled, let it not burn nor emit smoke, and then have a tall sacrificial post erected, and after it is erected, you yourself jump into that fire pit, then I shall proclaim the well-spoken teaching to you." The Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker said: "O Noble One, all the well-spoken teachings that I seek here are for the sake of the benefit of sentient beings. O Teacher, how can I jump into the fire pit without proclaiming the well-spoken teachings to sentient beings?" Then, that Brahmin spoke in verse to the Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker: "Where is happiness in seeking mantras? Where is happiness in seeking mantras? For seeking mantras, happiness is abandoned. Abandon a little happiness for seeking mantras." Then, the Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker retorted to that Brahmin in verse: "Where is happiness in seeking enlightenment? Where is happiness in seeking enlightenment? For seeking enlightenment, happiness is abandoned. Abandon happiness for seeking enlightenment." Then, the Brahmin boy Dharma-seeker said this to the Brahmin: "O Teacher."
