Therefore, one should observe the external dependent arising in five aspects. Similarly, internal dependent arising also arises from two causes. What are the two? They are cause and connection, and condition and connection. Among them, what is the internal dependent arising connected with cause? It is from "conditioned by ignorance, actions arise" to "conditioned by birth, aging and death arise." If ignorance does not arise, then actions will not appear. Similarly, if birth does not occur, then aging and death will not appear either. Thus, because of the existence of ignorance, actions become manifest and accomplished, and because of the existence of birth, aging and death become manifest and accomplished. However, ignorance does not think, "I will manifest and accomplish actions," nor do actions think, "We are manifested and accomplished by ignorance." Similarly, birth does not think, "I will manifest and accomplish aging and death," and aging and death do not think, "I am manifested and accomplished by birth," up to this point. However, because of the existence of ignorance, actions become manifest and accomplished and arise, and similarly, because of the existence of birth, aging and death become manifest and accomplished and arise. Therefore, one should observe the internal dependent arising in connection with cause. How should one observe the internal dependent arising in connection with condition? It is because the six elements are assembled. Which six elements are assembled? They are earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness elements. Because these are assembled, one should observe the internal dependent arising in connection with condition. Among them, what is the earth element of internal dependent arising? It is that which, when assembled, causes the solid substance of the body to become manifest and accomplished. This is called the earth element. That which performs the function of holding the body together is called the water element. That which digests what the body eats, drinks, chews, and tastes is called the fire element. That which causes the body's breath to go in and out

The act of making a curved movement is called the wind element. That which makes the body have internal cavities is called the space element. That which, in the manner of a quiver, makes the sprout of the name and form of the body manifest and accomplish, the collection of the five consciousnesses, and whatever is the consciousness of mind with defilements, this is called the consciousness element. Without these causes, the body will not be born. When the earth element inside is complete, and likewise water, fire, wind, space, and the consciousness elements are also complete, and all are assembled, from that the body will manifest and be accomplished. Thereupon, the earth element does not think, "I will assemble and make the solid substance of the body manifest and accomplish." The water element does not think, "I will perform the function of cohesion of the body." The fire element does not think, "I will digest the food, drink, chewing, and tasting of the body." The wind element does not think, "I will perform the function of the body's breath flowing in and out." The space element does not think, "I will make the body have internal cavities." The consciousness element does not think, "I will make the name and form of the body manifest and accomplish." The body also does not think, "I am produced by these causes," but although it does not think this, if these causes are present, the body will be born. Thereupon, the earth element is not self, not sentient being, not life, not a creator, not born of power, not a child of power, not a woman, not a man, not a hermaphrodite, not I, not mine, and not anyone else's. Likewise, the water element, the fire element, the wind element, the space element, and the consciousness element are also not self, not sentient being, not life, not a creator, not born of power, not a child of power, not a woman, not a man, not a hermaphrodite, not I, not mine, and not anyone else's. So, what is ignorance? It is the perception of these six elements themselves as being a single, solitary entity, or as a whole.

Not knowing, constantly clinging, firmly clinging, truly clinging, happily clinging, clinging to self, clinging to sentient beings, life, the born, the nourished, the person, the individual, clinging to the power-born, the power-child, clinging to what is called "I", called "mine", such various kinds of not understanding are called ignorance. Thus, because there is ignorance, desire, hatred, and delusion enter the objects. Among them, the desire, hatred, and delusion for the objects, this is the formations due to ignorance. Individually distinguishing things is consciousness. The four aggregates of close grasping that arise together with consciousness are name and form. The faculties that rely on name and form are the six sense sources. The gathering of three dharmas is contact. Experiencing contact is feeling. Clinging to feeling is craving. The increase of craving is grasping. What is born from grasping, and also the action that produces, is existence. The aggregates that arise from that cause are birth. The maturation of the aggregates after birth is aging. The destruction of the aggregates after aging is death. Dying and fainting, the inner complete suffering together with manifest attachment is sorrow. The words spoken that arise from sorrow are lamentation. The unpleasant feeling with the collection of five consciousnesses is suffering. The mental suffering with attention is displeasure. Furthermore, all such near afflictions are called disturbance. Therefore, because of the great darkness, it is ignorance. Because of manifest action, it is formations. Because of distinguishing, it is consciousness. Because of relying, it is name and form. Because of the door of birth, it is the six sense sources. Because of contact, it is contact. Because of feeling, it is feeling. Because of thirst, it is craving. Because of close grasping, it is grasping. Because of again having birth, it is existence. Because of the aggregates arising, it is birth. Because of the aggregates maturing, it is aging. Because of destruction, it is death. Because of sorrow, it is sorrow.
